The Domus Aurea was part of the project that Nero had devised to convert and transform Rome into a new city "Necropolis" following the Hellenistic model in the manner of Alexandria, this is, a city with an orthogonal plane with squares and wide rectilinear streets. With this same ideology, 60 years later, Emperor Hadrian built the gigantic Villa Tiburtina 30 km from Rome.
The cave was covered with painted figures. Soon the word spread and the young Roman artists lowered themselves down inside the cave to admire the beautiful ancient frescoes. Today the frescoes are faded but were studied during the Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael. Raphael even took inspiration from the frescoes of the Domus Aurea for the making of the Vatican Loggia. Thanks to the discovery of these paintings, the artistic term "grotesque" was created.
The construction of the Domus Aurea also known as the Golden House has been considered the most extravagant construction in the history of Rome.

Domus Aurea
The construction of the Domus Aurea also known as the Golden House has been considered the most extravagant construction in the history of Rome. This building had ceilings stocked with semi-precious stones and finished in ivory, precious mosaics, pools and fountains plus an artificial lake. Most of the walls were covered in frescoes, the rooms finished in white marble with shapes that played with light. The Domus Aurea also had pools and fountains that echoed the sound of water in the hallways.Guided by an educational operator you will visit the exceptional exhibition dedicated to Raphael, on the 500th anniversary of his death. For the first time, the Domus Aurea hosts an exhibition in the Octagonal Room. dedicated to the rediscovery of ancient paintings buried in the "caves" and to the interpretation given by Raphael and his followers to the "magical art" of Grotesques. 4.00I’m sure it was a great experience. When I booked this I thought it said the tour was in English. However , it was in Italian!! My son thank goodness knows Italian & was translating for me!! Very interesting & beautiful!! Can’t believe how Nero’s Palace from 2,000 years ago was preserved well in some areas!! The Virtual Reality was amazing & breath taking!! I felt like I was really there. This is definitely a tour to take but make sure in your language!! lol

5.00An excellent trip. Unbelievably interesting. The guide was top notch and thoroughly enjoyed our 75 minute visit! Her knowledge of the the excavation and her explanation made us really understand how this magnificent building looked like in Nero’s time as Emperor of Ancient Rome.

5.00The tour was just right for us. Small group, the right pace, and a guide who spoke perfect English. The guide's narrative was informative and clear. Not too technical but detailed enough to allow one to understand the series of events in the history of the Domus Aurea. The VR portion of the tour was sublime.

5.00This was a wonderful surprise. One of our group was educated in Rome and knew about this tour. I never had heard about this place but I now tell everyone going to Rome not to miss this tour. It is just yards from the Colosseum. Our guide was one of the working archeologists and her passion for the place was very evident. She went well over the scheduled time, but the time flew by. The virtual reality portion was extremely interesting and very informative. Anyone interested in Roman history should do this tour.

5.00I got my tickets for 16 Euros each from Tiqets. They were emailed to me by OnceUponATimeRomeTours and were labeled Coop Culture. I believe I took this tour or one substantially similar and recommend it. It is close to the Coliseum, but a little tough to find in the side of a hill. It's all underground so it can be colder. My wife and teen aren't into history but liked it. The VR is interesting and a good break. It is a well preserved site. I think over time this tour will get better and better. It is a large site. It was added to at one point by a different emperor. Our tour guide was an archeologist and very knowledgeable. A good start for us on our first night in Roma. This is the only tour that ever changed the time on me moving me up earlier in the afternoon.

1.00Reserved the space. The day changed because it wasn’t offered on the day I had requested even though that date was supposedly available. The direction stated we needed to exchange voucher at the venue for the ticket. Evidently the ticket was sent the day we were traveling from NM to Rome so checking was unavailable. Since I wasn’t expecting it didn’t realize I had it although supposedly I thanked them. Of course in the craziness of travel and jet lag it escaped me. Got to the venue 30 minutes before the time we needed to enter. Couldn’t find the area to exchange the voucher. Called the tour group THREE TIMES to find out what we needed to do. No answer. Ended up missing the tour after waiting 20 years to go. The responses were very snotty. No help or acknowledgement of the confusion. Basically telling me I was stupid. Lost $150. As you might imagine I will NEVER recommend this tour group to anyone.

Love the place but, it was difficult to hear the guide and my VR head set stopped working.

2.00Very cool historic place. But...the tour was disappointing. It was difficult to understand the tour guide. The cavernous rooms made it difficult to hear her. She also had a strong Italian accent and she spoke very quickly which made it challenging to try to decipher what she was saying when I could hear her. Distributing ear buds to the group so you can actually hear would be a great idea. I spoke to the staff at the end of the tour and they said they didn't think it was possible to use ear buds for the tour group because they didn't think they worked underground. Too many tickets were sold through the Domus Aurea website so not everyone got to have the AR experience because there was a limited number of AR head sets. Mine stopped working in the middle of the presentation. It was disappointing. Also, do not buy your tickets through Viator or any other company. You can buy them directly through the Domus Aurea website and they are much cheaper.
