Mount Etna
Along the trail that will take us up to 2000mt a.s.l., our guide will tell you about how the highest volcano in Europe was born, without leaving the aspects related to flora and fauna that characterize it. After admiring old and new lava flows we will proceed on foot to the inner part of old craters. The charming panorama and the picturesque scenery will give us the feeling of being on the moon. After a short break, the hike will continue with a visit, carrying helmet and torch, inside a lava cave to admire a unique spectacle. Walking through a luxuriant vegetation, we will finally admire the spectacular Valle del Bove.

So much was great about this experience. First, as it happens I’m visiting Catania during an unusually wet period. In fact, I started to doubt Mt. Etna even existed until yesterday when a break in the rain unveiled its splendor. My first trip was canceled because of the rotten weather. The service was so apologetic, but when there’s hail storms at sea level I can only imagine what it must have been like at the top. I couldn’t do the make-up date, but they were accommodating allowing me to do the tour the following weekend. I booked the Italian tour because I’m trying to give myself immersive experiences to get stronger in the language as a personal goal. While my Italian speaking isn’t great, I generally can understand maybe 85% — still, everyone associated with the tour was extremely patient with the American with poor Italian language skills. The guide spoke at a normal pace and annunciated so I understood almost everything. They also came to a hotel not on the list a ways out in Aci Castello, something I didn’t expect — they even arrived 10 minutes earlier than I expected and we were off. The views going up the mountain are breathtaking, and surprisingly, there are some really beautiful towns on Etna’s slopes with lots of wineries (I wish I had a list, I want to try all of them) and citrus orchards. The highlight was a lava tube cave — pretty cool, and thankfully, there were no bats. You do have to watch your step and duck a lot, if you are over 6’4 maybe it’s not for you. The really rough part was that I have a bit of asthma and I live like 20 feet above sea level, so being around 10,000 ft above was a lot for me. I was feeling a bit of altitude sickness (lightheaded, out of breath) by the time we reached the base camp (or, base gift shops and restaurants, but base camp sounds better). I asked if they’d let me stay below at the restaurant and they were so nice about it. I was kind of embarrassed, I admit, but it was for the best. Listen to your body, as they say. Even though I didn’t do “the hike” to the crater, I’m still very happy with the experience overall, it was totally worth it.

This was a once in a lifetime experience. We were inside the volcano lava flow and also at the summit in the same day. Our guide was knowledgeable and amazingly friendly.

Great excursion. Our guide, Giuseppe, was very friendly. He knows all the secrets of Etna with its multiple craters. A real moment of happiness. I also enjoyed the experience, with helmet and lamp lent by the guide, of discovering a volcanic cave.

I really liked the trip. Everything was well organized and we had great weather. The tour was particularly exciting because we learned a lot of new things. The atmosphere in the group was also very good.

Very nice morning (8:30-15:00) visit of Etna. The Francophone guide, Giuseppe, was very friendly, explained everything and answered our questions. Pick up and drop off at the hotel. We booked this tour a week before the date (fortunately we were out of season), because another provider we booked more than a month earlier cancelled us a week before the date .. it was Go Etna. So we strongly recommend you to prefer Etna Est!

We recommend this tour. We stopped at three sites on Etna. Our guide told us all about Etna and made sure we were all comfortable with what we were doing. We went up to visit a crater, which was really interesting. My husband went into the lava cave. Thank you for the wine and almond biscuits.

Must see if you are in the vicinity. Climb by easy car to the Sapienza shelter and then depending on the weather walk through the lower craters or cable car to the upper ones. In any case, you have to go up to Etna.
