The Montevideo carnival is one of the oldest and most popular traditions in Uruguayan culture. From the last days of January to the first days of March, dozens of groups grouped into five categories (Murgas, Comedians, Parodists, Magazines and Troupes of blacks and lubolos) tour the city performing on stages called “tablados.” At the same time they participate in the Official Competition of Carnival Groups.
Since the beginning of the last century, the stage has been the natural meeting place for carnival festivities. It is the expression of the popular festival, tradition and heritage of the city. It is there where great popular artists have come into contact with murguero singing, candombe and all the artistic expressions of our carnival.
At night we can see between 2 and 4 shows on a stage, you will feel the carnival culture as we experience it in Montevideo and it makes many travelers visit us for these artistic expressions.

One of the most popular Tablados is located in front of the Legislative Palace, beautiful for its lighting at night. We will go to the "Plaza 1 de Mayo" where one of the most popular platforms in the city is installed, where you will have your entry and location as a common citizen. You can see the shows as well as access the food and drinks area with traditional delicacies.

Only experience about the Uruguayan carnival, particular and different to what is known in Argentina. Montevideo is the place where the main activities take place and there the murgas are the outstanding display of this cultural expression of the "charrúas", each of them with a dose of humor, politics, criticism and social sense about this country. Society participates in large numbers to the Tablados in various points, parades of comparsas on the AVDA. July 18 and Tablados in different parts of the city. It is recommended to see a performance of the Candombe bands. I was able to go to the board of Parque Rodó and a unique memory remained in my memory.

This is not something that will be at all enjoyable to a non- Spanish speaker. There is much more verbiage than singing and dancing and the level of singing and dancing is equivalent to a high school performance. There was no representative to guide us when we arrived. Although the offer included no waiting in line, when we did that, everyone on line was jeering us and it felt threatening. Although the doors were supposed to open at 8:00, they didn’t until 8:30 and the show didn’t start til 9:00. We did have good seats, for what that’s worth. We left after an hour.
