After pickup in central New Orleans, it's a short drive across Lake Pontchartrain to Honey Island Swamp, a wildlife preserve that is one of the last protected wetlands in Louisiana.

Your guide welcomes you aboard a custom-made 22-passenger flat-bottom boat. The smaller sized, quiet boat can fit through narrow passages in the swamp foliage so that you see more and get closer to wildlife. As your guide explains the history of Louisiana’s wetlands and swamp ecosystem, be on the lookout for alligators, raccoons, owls, wild boar, nutria, snakes, turtles, black bears, bald eagles and other bird species. Get a close look at some wild gators as your guide shares facts about the toothy beasts, who can weigh up to 1,000 pounds (453 kg). Glide safely through the fertile swamplands, learning about Cajun culture and how local people have utilized the swamp for food, homes, and medicine. You even see an authentic Cajun village that is only accessible by boat. Gain an understanding of why the wetlands are slowly disappearing and about the efforts being made to preserve Louisiana's natural treasures. After a fascinating 2-hour boat tour, your guide returns you to shore.

We traveled in a covered boat through a beautiful swamp, filled with alligators, turtles, snakes and adorable raccoons. Even though it rained (more like a mist) we didn't care. I loved learning about the people, the community, the history, even how to catch a crawfish. Our guide Will was fun, knowledgeable and kept us well-entertained. The bus ride to the swamp was about 40 minutes but our driver Derek kept us amused with his strong opinions about food and restaurants and his stories about New Orleans. About my only criticism--and this is small--I would like to have had a choice about where to pick up the bus. We walked nearly a mile when there was a stop two blocks from our hotel. Overall, it hardly mattered. We had a wonderful time. One we won't soon forget.

Captain Ben was awesome!!!!! He was good at pointing things we would have never seen. I recommend the trip. Lots of wildlife.

We saw lots of wildlife. Captain was informative and entertaining. Derek the bus driver gave an amazing history of New Orleans pre- and post-Katrina.

There is a place out at the swamp to get snacks, drinks and souvenirs. We saw lots of birds and animals - would have been even without!

Since it's winter time, alligators don't go out so it's been a total disappointment because we didn't see anything. We feel very lying down or stolen.

Jacob was knowledgeable and made sure everyone saw lots. Interesting showing the different ecosystems in the marshes.
