Thanks to Ivar we learned a lot about Northern lights and how to spot/ predict them. There were lots of clouds around Bodø so we drove 2/3 h east until the clouds were gone. We stopped at several locations but there was no activity at all. Even after hours no sign of northern lights. A solar storm was predicted but as we found out the day after, it didn’t hit the earth. So the next day we spontaneously met again and we were lucky: the clouds around Bodø lifted and we were able to see them at locations around Bodø. Thanks a lot Ivar for trying everything to finally make us see the northern lights!

I had an incredible aurora hunting experience with Nordland Turselskap. My guide was exceptionally patient and enthusiastic throughout the entire journey. He spent 7 hours driving and scouting for the best clear skies to ensure I didn't miss the lights. During the freezing Arctic night, he thoughtfully prepared hot drinks. Not only was he a great companion, but he was also a professional photographer. He captured stunning, high-quality photos of me with the aurora, which he shared via a link later. He is truly a "nice" person who makes you feel safe and cared for. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bodø!

We (colleagues) had an amazing experience with Nordland Adventures! Our guide, Ivar, was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable, and made the whole journey unforgettable. He took us to several stunning locations and shared stories that brought the Arctic to life. We truly enjoyed every moment and couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Highly recommended!

The trip was set for Saturday, however by chance I happened to arrive on the Thursday, it was just as well since the Friday yielded some of the most spectacular views the sky over Bodø has to offer. Ivar believed there were better odds of seeing the northern lights on the Thursday and sent me a text asking if I was ready to go that evening instead, fortunately I was. He was right. He explained his thinking behind the possibility of seeing the lights and showed us the charts and info that gave him the indication on a website called SpaceWeatherLive among several other sites. We set off from the edge of the town and into the night, making our first sighting of what looked like potential activity, just minutes into the drive. Just a short drive to the local beach where the Arctic Hike activity takes place, we stopped and set up camp to see if we could spot anything. Almost on command, a display of lights began overhead. They stretched all the way from the mountain and spiralled toward the city of Bodø. I hadn’t seen them until now so this was quite a surprise and I didn’t expect to see them so early into the night. The show lasted around 30 minutes and displayed some awesome scenes including a lit up mountain range. After taking a lot of photographs, we finally decided to move to the next location, a fjord further into the nature outside the city. On arrival we initially didn’t see anything and unfortunately it remained quiet for the better part of an hour. We went to a small lakeside thereafter and Ivar told us stories of previous experiences like when he brought a group as far as Finland just to see the lights. He also spoke of the Geminides which were due to make an appears that night and how he would love to catch a shooting star in his photo - I do believe he managed to do so as well! After almost an hour with no activity, we decided to start heading back towards the Fjord from which we had come. On the way back we seen an even more spectacular display of lights over our heads, quickly pulling over and setting up we shot some of the best photos of the evening and these lights were directly over our heads. The night ended down by the fjord where the last of the lights twirled and twisted overhead. To say this experience was incredible would be an understatement - Nordland Adventures and Ivar ensured I seen exactly what I came for and I even got a profile photo. We tried one last location closer to the city but by then the lights had called it a night and so did we close to midnight. Three sightings in the same evening; not bad for a first time. We got especially lucky with the sighting starting early in the evening around 7pm. Ivar also shared with us the photos he took and provided tips on how to shoot Aurora photography. While a professional DSLR is a good idea for this trip, it’s not essential. Each photo you see here except the one of me and the lights was taken on an iPhone. You only need to wrap up well - it was very very cold! For phone photography, switch the night mode to between 3 and 10 seconds, you can prop yourself against the van for support and steadiness like me although there are phone tripods available too (I just liked the challenge of handheld). If you want to record the lights above, your best option is to set the quality to 4K60fps - the other options don’t appear to show the lights and turn up dark but the option above captures them just fine?? Not sure why. Apple antics I guess. With a little editing it can turn out brilliant. A worthy mention is that there is the option of a hot drink on the trip which helped immensely; the van also has a sliding door that we could sit in it and shoot while shielded from the icy wind that was present. The trip cost around €180 but true to the description, it gave me the best chance of seeing the lights. This trip is well suited to groups and solo travelers alike. Ivar’s experience will help you take some of the best photos and give you a really good shot at seeing the Aurora during your stay in Bodø. I’d go on this trip again without hesitation. It was a first time experience for me and one I’ll never forget.

Ivar is very knowledgeable of Bodø, definetly stop by his shop for any advice. This was the best of all the tours I booked for the Northern lights. Ivar drove far into the night for us to get the best experience. Price is great, he is welcoming even if you can't speak English well. Got some really good snaps and views on both nights I went.

var contacted us a few days before the tour to check in on us and see how our travels had been so far. We’d had disappointing weather, and two aurora tours before his had been cancelled. He kept encouraging us that the night we booked with him would be better — and he was right. On the tour night, he made every effort to literally chase the best spot for seeing the Aurora around Bodø. It was a cloudy night and not easy, but thanks to his determination we managed to see it twice! It ended up being the best experience we had, and we’re very happy to recommend him to anyone visiting Bodø. 😊 He also took very professional photos of Aurora with us in it.

We didn’t just watch the northern lights. We were in places to be fascinated by it and were equipped to enjoy it. It was like going on a picnic with friends and it wasn’t crowded, and it was obvious that our Guide Ivar was enjoying it. He knew the area well and read predictions for the northern lights. previews everything possible, taking action. It’s not just for the northern lights, but it’s trying to learn about your interests and keeps you informed. His recommendations made my vacation better. The English is very good and I can easily translate where I need to translate. The car was very comfortable, ideal for taking in the view and warm. Hot drinks and snacks, spare headlamps, powebank, and good music. The tour is longer than scheduled and usually ends earlier. And I'm especially grateful for bringing me my hot tub that I forgot in the car :) If it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, don’t waste your money with tours that are free to return with 15-20 people.
