Head deep into the hutongs with us as we explore some of the best food in the city. These wandering alleyways are bustling with local neighborhood life, and some of the best mom-and-pop shops are buried deep down the lanes.

5.00Joining our knowledgeable guide Jesus was a great experience! He showed us spots in the Hutong I’ve walked right past without noticing before. The tour shows a good balance of food tasting, fascinating stories and lots of laughs. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a deep dive into Beijing’s Hutong culture, because let’s be honest, I'd never discover this side on my own :D

5.00This ended up being a private tour after another guest was unable to attend - Garth did a great job explaining the various dishes, their origination, and the specific stories of the restaurants/chefs involved. The food was great with the noodles and crepes being my favorites

5.00This was one of the memorable evenings I had on my China trip. We lucked out by getting Garth Wilson as our guide . He is an amazing storyteller with very deep understanding of history , culture and of course food . He gave us great context to the food we had , so the experience was far greater than just tasting new flavours. In 3 hours we were hanging on to every word he uttered, as we zig zagged through the hutongs , stopping by at joints and restuarants that on our own, I would never find.

5.00This is actually the 2nd time I've gone on this particular tour, with Garth as my guide both times! Yes, I enjoyed it so much the first time, I decided to join again on my subsequent trip to Beijing. From Old Beijing-style lamb hot pot to jianbing to spicy chicken wings, all the food is delicious and covers a great variety of local dishes. Garth is a fount of interesting information about the cuisine and local neighborhoods (and he provides a goodly amount of alcohol for those interested:). You also get to meet some nice fellow-travelers! I cannot recommend this highly enough - especially if you would otherwise feel a little bit intimidated walking into/ordering in the small local joints by yourself.

5.00I did this tour when I was visiting China for the first time with my mum, and it was an amazing experience! My only regret was doing it on our last day in Beijing, as we discovered some really nice restaurants where we could have gone back to eat again if we had had more time. Garth was a fantastic guide and host — his explanations were very detailed and easy to follow, and he created a really nice and friendly atmosphere. The other participants were also very kind and pleasant. The tour length is just right, as you get to try several traditional dishes while walking a bit between each stop. I really recommend this tour to anyone who wants to discover traditional Beijing (and northern Chinese) food with clear explanations about history and culture in a warm and friendly setting!
