There was some miscommunication on the part of Viator in the beginning. Once we were able to communicate directly with our tour guide, Nomi, we had an outstanding tour. He was so knowledgeable and friendly. We had a great time with him. He was very flexible and accommodating. A bonus was his skill with photography. We got some unbelievable shots and learned so much. We recommend Nomi to anyone going to Kyoto.

We had a fabulous day with Malik as our guide. He contacted us the night before to confirm place and time of pick up, and asked about any special requests for our trip. He picked us up at our hotel on time in a clean and spacious vehicle. We spent the day touring all the beautiful areas of Kyoto while he explained all the history and rituals of each site. He knew all the best places for photos and made a point of capturing our group all together in each location. He was personable with a nice sense of humor and answered all our questions. We saw all the places that we wanted to see, plus! Such a great tour for first time visiting Kyoto!

Our guide, Dhanu, was relatively nice and did give us some information about where we were going and what we were seeing. However, the car was very dirty and had stains everywhere and Dhanu himself had only lived in Japan for 2 years so he knew little about the culture and history of Japan. We have learned on our travels that you have to be careful when booking through certain tour guide companies because they are run by people who are not in Japan and they hire people who know nothing about the country. Furthermore, our tour started at 8am and by 3:30pm we were very tired and had jet-leg so we asked if we could just end the tour, to which his response was “no.” After some awkward laughing he convinced us to go see one more thing and ended up taking us down a one way road full of traffic that was not moving at all. After about 25 minutes of not moving an inch in this traffic we asked him if we could please just drop us off where we had originally asked him and thankfully he was able to back out of the street and we were able to do so. This experience sort of creeped us out, as did the repeated and insistent verbal and text messages about leaving a review (which we clearly listened too ;). Over all make sure when you come to Japan you book through a Japanese tour company, otherwise you may get tour guides who know nothing about the country they are supposed to show you.
