This History Tour has been curated by heritage professionals to uncover the notorious secrets, stories & scandals of Kings Cross — Sydney's historic red-light strip.

Once a bourgeois neighbourhood boasting harbour-side mansions & Victorian villas, this bustling pocket of Sydney was transformed by bohemia, entertainment & modernist architecture during the roaring 1920's Jazz Age. Amidst the sparkling lights of its inter-war years, The Cross also became riddled with backstreet bordellos, sly-grog stores, razor-wielding gangs, crime-lords (and ladies), murders, mysteries & martinis.

By the 1960s, the streets teamed with revellers visiting its red-light strip of neon fantasies, nightclubs & local eccentrics — dubbed in the media as 'Sin City'. Crime and corruption continued as new heavyweights such as The Boss of The Cross took the reigns, and by 1975 the neighbourhood was embroiled in one of Sydney's most scandalous cold-case murder mysteries.

We did this tour 2 April 2022. Max, the tour guide, was exceptional. The tour was over three hours and was extremely interesting, information very well presented and a truly great experience. Highly recommended.

For newcomers and locals alike, this is an incredibly interesting tour of Sydney's iconic suburb, Kings Cross. Max takes you on a truly engaging and scandalous social history tour of Kings Cross and its neighbouring suburbs. Max was an informative and very knowledgeable guide and historical story teller. A 'must do' in Sydney!

We spent a fascinating couple of hours with Danica exploring the backstreets of Potts Point. As a local (along with an out of towner) there was history along with some really interesting stories we both learned. Danica was an engaging and passionate tour guide who was super knowledgeable and made the tour interesting and fun. Would highly recommend.

The tour guide was very well informed and reminded me of many things I had forgotten. The tour was well planned, well executed and highly entertaining. Danica brought the characters of The Cross to life.

This was our second tour with Journey Walks, the first was the Rocks tour. The tours are well researched, informative, very entertaining and I can’t recommend them highly enough. I’ve never done a tour anywhere that’s as good as these guys.

Walking history tour with Max was the high light of our stay in Sydney. The only pity was that we did it in the last days of our stay, so I highly recommend to do it in the beginning. The script of the tour was interesting and well prepared. The human stories about people who have lived and influenced the area were so interesting. Max was a great, warm and professional guide.
