Fun and interesting. Lloyd was our guide. He was knowledgeable and interesting. He really seemed to care about our experience. The farm was amazing with beautiful scenery and an interesting history. Highly recommend.

This 4WD tour of a working ranch was excellent. while we didn't see much of the actual ranch operation, we drove all over the vast Wanaka Station Ranch and learned a lot about its history and operation. Our guide, Chris, was very knowledgeable and friendly and definitely contributed greatly to our satisfaction with the tour. Of particular interest to us was learning about Ridgeline's work with the rancher to try to eliminate the invasive species (mainly possums and stoats) that were introduced to curb the growth of another introduced species (rabbits) and instead wound up devasting the local bird populations. This is an issues through NZ, and everywhere we visited we saw evidence of the ongoing efforts to eliminate these animals and to restore threatened bird species. We also learned a lot about the local fauna and how it evolved the way it did.

I booked this Wild Hills Safari tour on a whim just a day before our flight from Singapore to New Zealand, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! Our guide, Brent, was fantastic—an excellent driver and incredibly knowledgeable. We learned so much about local conservation efforts, including the traps set to control pests like weasels and possums. He also shared fascinating insights into Wanaka’s farming history from the 1800s and the diverse plant life in the mountains. The short hike up the mountain was absolutely worth it—the panoramic view of Lake Wanaka under clear blue skies was breathtaking. We truly appreciated the warm hospitality, including the delicious coffee, tea, and fruit cake. Apologies for arriving a little late due to parking our caravan! Highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Wanaka.
An unforgettable insight into life on a sheep station

Lloyd Thayer drove us into a rugged 30,000 acre sheep farm and up vertiginous tracks high above Lake Wanaka. What a drive if jangling on the nerves: great views of the farm, the stock (sheep, cattle and deer) and, of course, the dry and beautiful countryside especially across the lake. Throughout Lloyd was a mine of information - in particular the history of the farm, stock farming, the farm environment and how farmers look after their environment at the same time as working their farms. The more we asked him, the more he told us. He showed us the original homestead and a stoat trap. We had tea at a spectacular high point looking down Lake Wanaka. In summary, this was a wonderful afternoon with a wonderful guy, and we could not fault him as a guide. Terrific. Highly recommended!

Lloyd is a fantastic guide, and the trip my wife and I took with him this past November was a great experience. We traveled the length and breadth of the ranch and farm country surrounding Lake Wanaka, stopping off at one gorgeous overlook during our travels to have tea and biscuits that Lloyd had thoughtfully provided. We learned along the way about such things as the local history of the settlements around the lake, the methods of trapping ferrets (a problem on the ranch lands), and the different ways in which the natural evolution of the land and the lake has occurred over the years. To top it off, Lloyd personable and friendly, as well as unflappable when, at one point, a blast of wind blew his hat off and he wasted no time in retrieving it (see the picture)! It was a wonderful time, and we heartily recommend Lloyd and Ridgeline Adventures as a great way to see Wanaka and environs!

Our guide, Lloyd Thayer, took us on a tour of the West Wanaka High Country Station. We learned so much about conservation and predator control projects and some of the history of the area. We took some gorgeous photos from a high point. Lloyd shared some personal anecdotes (and his coffee making talents) which added to the experience. Certainly a highlight of our trip to beautiful NZ!

This morning, we had an early start with a 4WD adventure with Ridgeline Safari. Words fail to describe how utterly spectacular this morning was with jaw-dropping mountain-top panoramic views of Lake Waneka as we were expertly driven by Rae through West Wanaka High Country Station. This so-called farm is actually an enormous range for the herds of sheep, cattle and red deer raised here. The rugged dirt road on the steep mountains often zigzags to the 4000 ft summit amazingly close to the mountain's edge. The road was narrow, bumpy, twisty with sheer drops in places, but we felt safe with our friendly and adept driver Rae, who easily negotiated the rough terrain so that we could appreciate the stunning beauty around every turn. It was a thrilling ride and a grand way to spend the morning. We stopped for scenic views and had coffee and cake amidst the breathtaking landscapes. This was definitely a highlight of our trip. I highly recommend it

Made our Australia/New Zealand trip with my travel companions. Just enjoyed it. Beautiful views, lots of information and great fun. Delicious coffee/tea/cookie stop in the middle of the plot. Just enjoy. And good to know that they also use the proceeds from this tour to plant trees that really belong in the New Zealand landscape.
