Do you dream of joining a real musher for a once in a lifetime Arctic Experience? Are all the dog sledding tours in Abisko fully booked during your time in Abisko? Don’t worry – Lights Over Lapland is here to help! Before Covid arrived Abisko was blessed with several dog sledding companies, which offered our guests lots of choice and availability. Sadly, Covid led to the loss of 50% of the dog sledding capacity in Abisko so now there is only one provider in the National Park who offers dog sledding adventures. They are a fantastic company, with incredible dog sledding trips in Abisko, but unfortunately for our guests they are usually fully booked months in advance. This makes it very difficult to find availability for our guests on the ground in Abisko. With this in mind, Lights Over Lapland, and our friends at Kiruna Dogsled have an exciting dog sledding adventure in the beautiful village of Oinakka – just outside of Kiruna, near the world’s original Icehotel.
Not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health
Suitable for all physical fitness levels
During the dog sledding adventure, your professional musher/guide will drive a sled which accommodates up to four guests. Having a professional musher drive the sled ensures the highest levels of safety for our guests, and allows healthy guests of nearly all levels of physical ability to enjoy this once in a lifetime dog sledding adventure. While your professional musher controls the team of dogs, you can sit back, relax, take LOTS of pictures and enjoy every second of your time in the Arctic wilderness. Approximately halfway through the dog sledding adventure, we will stop at our remote Arctic wilderness camp where your guide will prepare a warm fire, piping hot drinks and classic Swedish Fika. After you have had a chance to relax by the fire, we will hop back on the dog sled and continue with our 10 – 12 KM circuit. Please know that you may have to share a sled with other people. We allow up to 4 people per sled. The actual time on the sled is approximately 2 x 30 minutes but can be slightly shorter or longer depending on snow conditions. This activity takes place in Oinakka, near Kiruna. Round trip transportation from Abisko & Björkliden is included (2 hours single journey).
Pickup included
Warm overalls, winter boots, hats and gloves.
Round trip transportation from Abisko or Björkliden to the dogsledding camp near Kiruna.
Warm drink and cinnamon bun is included but please bring your own lunch.
Lunch is not included nor available for purchase at the dogsledding camp so we highly recommend that you bring a packed lunch on this excursion.

What a fantastic time we had in Abisko thanks to selecting Lights Over Lapland to arrange everything. Any great vacation experience begins with the people helping you, and Gavin was outstanding. He was prompt, kind, flexible, funny and professional. He met us at and dropped us off at the Kiruna airport. He was always very attentive to our safety. He knows the area and taught us so much about Abisko. We were not very optimistic about seeing the Northern Lights as we looked at weather forecasts, but never fear. Gavin was always assessing conditions and communicating with other guides. Our first night we drove a few minutes and saw an absolutely stunning, bright, colorful, incessant display, something to remember the rest of my life. Thanks to Gavin’s resourcefulness, we saw the lights every night of the four nights we were there, and each night’s display was special. Gavin took us on great day trips exploring the area, including a visit to the fascinating Ice Hotel—lots of cool rooms to see, a fun bar, though I’m glad we didn’t spend the night there. Lights also arranged a dogsled ride through Abisko.net and we had a blast. Our musher, Daniel, was a fascinating guy and we learned a great deal from him. The dogs were so much fun—excited, friendly, and they obviously enjoyed pulling the sled. We even were able to pet husky puppies—ultimate cuteness. Clare is an excellent property manager. We stayed in a beautiful two bedroom home with a picture window view of the lake and mountains from the living room. Everything was sparkling clean. The beds (one king in one room, two twins in another) were very comfortable, the shower and bathroom were great, and we even did a load of laundry. We were spoiled for choice for food; breakfast, lunch and dinner, with easy recipes to follow for dinner. We asked for fresh fruit and had more than we needed. We brought our own wine. Lights Lapland has my highest recommendation—thanks to everyone involved for a memorable and wonderful experience.
