New Town
The initial plan for Edinburgh’s New Town was approved by the City Council in 1767, and is the largest complete example of town planning from the Georgian period anywhere in the world. Its mixture of classical architecture, grand squares and terraces, gardens and secluded lanes, means that a walk through its streets is a journey back in time to an age of elegance. Highlights of the New Town Charlotte Square, designed by the architect Robert Adam in 1791, is regarded as an architectural masterpiece. Here you can visit the Georgian House and gain some insights into daily life from 200 years ago. In nearby George Street the Assembly Rooms, which date from 1787, is still used for concerts, dancing and entertainment. At the opposite end of George Street is St Andrew Square, where the gardens are now open to the public.

From the moment Martin met us in the hotel lobby until our return in the evening we had a fantastic time walking the Royal Mile, touring Edinburgh Castle and enjoying excellent authentic Scottish cuisine. Martin was an absolute fountain of knowledge who answered all of our questions and educated us on the storied history as we walked along and through the old town of Edinburgh. There were a number of locations on the walk where we would not have seen or understood the significance without Martin’s local and historical knowledge. Martin ensured he set a pace that allowed us to see all but not feel we were in a marathon. We were surprised at the end of the walk to discover we had covered 10 kilometres in our day because it felt like we had only gone a few. The lunch location Martin chose was comfortable, accommodating and well located. His guidance through the choices of authentic Scottish cuisine allowed us a taste of Scotland and we came away with new favourites to try when we return to Canada. I would highly recommend if you are going to Edinburgh that you contact Martin McMenigall for well rounded experience on this fascinating city.

This private day tour is a must. Our tour guide, Brian, was the best. A very helpful and informative person. He had a great personality and tailored the tour to fit our tastes. It was a delightful day. We saw so many great sites in Edinburgh. But also had time to eat pur lunch in a nice green park.

Cruise ship cancelled port disembark due to safety concerns but Viator won't cancel my booking or issue any refund. Zero refund and NO future booking compensation were offered. My friends and I are OUT $1285 dollars. Very disappointing and we would not use this company again!! Will definitely share our experience with our friends and followers in our social media.

There were two Viking ships in two different ports. Our driver was waiting at the wrong port. Apparently, he was not given the proper information. He eventually picked us up 20 minutes later, so it wasn’t a big deal. Our driver was very nice and professional, however, we expected more of a tour guide than a driver with occasional information. He could have given us more historical and landmark info without us asking questions. He did, however, answer all our questions.

Everything went smoothly and William was great. Professional and knowlegeable. He helped one of our group who was having problems walking due to a recent leg injury. He couldn’t have been more thoughtful!

Much to our surprise our driver Willie told us it was his first day on the job. He was as delightful, funny and interesting as any veteran could be. Ask for Willie. You won’t regret it.
