Ecola State Park
After driving through the lush Coast Range Mountains, our first stop will be at one of our coastline's most breathtaking vistas which inspired William Clark (of the famous Lewis & Clark Expedition) to write in poetic fashion when his party first arrived in 1805, “… I beheld the grandest and most pleasing prospects my eyes had ever surveyed in front of a boundless ocean!”. That same sense of wonder still rings true for all who stand at Ecola Point, feel the salty sea air upon their face and cast their gaze out over the swirling blue-green waters of the mighty Pacific. The striking shoreline is dotted with dozens of dramatic basalt islands and arches, complimented by windswept rolling hills decorated with gnarled, ancient Sitka Spruce trees. Ecola has many beautiful locations of interest to explore and we may take a deeper dive into the park to search for wild herds of Roosevelt Elk, black bear, bald eagles, osprey, raccoons and even the mythical Sasquatch who roam these very forests!
Indian Beach
If the flow of the day and time allow, sometimes your guide will choose to visit Indian Beach and stroll along the vast stretch of this exceedingly picturesque surfing beach peppered with rocky islands. As another fun option, sometimes we enjoy a short hike to a stunning viewpoint while walking through lush temperate rainforest filled with huckleberries, salmonberries, thimbleberries, ferns, lichens and liverworts which grow prolifically upon the colorful tapestry of the forest floor. Stroll through this unique forest surrounded by towering old-growth Spruce, majestic Hemlock and sacred Western Red Cedar arboreal giants! Your guide will unravel the myriad fascinating Native American uses of many of these forest treasures and we'll discuss some of the cinematic fame these forests and beaches have garnered throughout the years!

What a great day! Jim, our tour guide, picked us up at our hotel and off we went to see amazing vistas and learn interesting facts. He kept the pace moving and fun the entire time, taking care to learn a bit about everyone in the group so that he could point out things of particular interest. Our favorite parts were the walk to Indian Beach (we saw two adult Bald Eagles soaring above us on the beach) and Cannon Beach/Haystack Rock (we brought out binoculars so we could see the Tufted Puffins). Such beautiful country and coast!

Recently a group of friends and I decided to visit local bookstores in the Portland, Oregon area. Here are three that we enjoyed: Literary Arts - 716 SE Grand Avenue. - They have a very nice collection of books and a great cafe for snacks or lunch!! They offer an assortment of programs (readers and writers) as well as events. Bold Coffee and Books - 1755 SW Jefferson - small bookstore with a focus on marginalized populations. They hold events/readings here as well. Coffee, pastries and limited other food... Very nice owner, Ally, who is available to answer questions. Bishop and Wilde - 2601 NW Thurman - A queer owned store, in a lovely Victorian house, selling new and used books. They hold events/readings. Dogs (and cats) welcome. No coffee here but several coffee shops nearby and they are fine if you bring your own to the store. We are continuing our bookstore exploration... more reviews to come.

Jim was our driver and was great. Very knowledgeable about the area. The sand castle competition was going on so he gave us more time at Cannon beach. The tide was out so we were able to see the tide pools. Was a great day!

We enjoyed a full day of sightseeing, birdwatching, walking, eating and learning some very interesting things about the coast and Portland. Our guide Jim was so entertaining and thoughtful. There were younger travelers as well as a few youthful 80’s.
