Grutas de Mira de Aire

Visit Mira de Aire Caves, the biggest in Portugal, discovered in 1947; The entrance to these caves is 300m above sea level, but inside the caves the depth drops to 180m. Its formation dates back to 150 million years ago, in the middle Jurassic, when dinosaurs populated this region, leaving their footprints on the ground, which you can see. The caves are illuminated with colored light effects that highlight the beauty of the shapes molded into stalagmites and stalactites. Along the route, the guide will draw your attention to the strange limestone shapes shaped over millions of years, such as the "Jellyfish", the "Martian" or the magnificent "Organ". The "Black River" cascades down to the "Great Lake" where the magical Sound and Light show takes place. In 2010, the Mira de Aire Caves were elected one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal.
