Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei

There is a monument in Lisbon that makes you doubt which side of the Atlantic you ended up on. But there's no mistake, it's really in Lisbon and Cristo-Rei, on the south bank of the Tagus River, is not the Redeemer of Corcovado, in Rio de Janeiro. The view is equally impressive for one of the oldest cities in Europe. The sanctuary of Cristo-Rei was built through fundraising, carried out by all Portuguese children over the course of 19 years – and through the commitment of the episcopate, based on an idea proposed by Cardinal Cerejeira in 1934. This monument, which gives thanks for the gift of peace bestowed in Portugal throughout the 19th century. XX, was inaugurated on May 17, 1959 and offers you one of the most beautiful views of Lisbon.
