Psiloritis Mountain is the highest mountain on the island of Crete (2,456m).
The Greek Mythology is set at the mountain range of Psiloritis where Idaion Antron is located. According to greek mythology, there is the cave where Deus, the King of the Gods, was raised. The ruins at Ancient Zominthos and the surrounding areas mark the occupation of Psiloritis mountain, since the Minoan period. Diachronic exploitation of the landscape is visible, with many scattered villages near the fringes of the mountain and intense pastoral practices held by the locals at the hillsides.

Psiloritis Mountain
The highest peak of Timios Stavros(2.456m), offers a panoramic view all over Crete, given the fact that you are at the highest level of the island. The small church, in the area of Timios Stavros, made of stone and the style of cretan “mitato”, is unique and typical of the cretan landscape. Because of its history, it’s geological and its environmental value, Psiloritis is part of Geoparks of UNESCO, which places the mountain amongst the Geoparks of high importance at global level. Who can doubt that conquering the highest peak of Crete is an extraordinary experience?

this is a very nice authentic experience for people who like nature, mountains and physical activities. I said authentic because it didn’t seem to be commercial.

Alternative Crete guide provided a great experience beyond all expectation. As a first time hiker, I was given the best possible advice and was made to feel prepared, well equip, confident and supported at every stage of the journey. I was given motivation in the right measure, at the right time, to complete the hike safely, and with all needs considered. I had time to view an incredible landscape, restore energy when needed and maintain a good pace to reach the summit in high spirits. I was grateful to have such a great introduction to mountain hiking. I highly recommend this tour company to anyone and I sincerely hope to hire them again whenever I am able to travel to Crete. Bravo Alternative Crete! Efkaristo!

Kostas did a nice job guiding us up the path. We had never used walking poles before but borrowed a pair from him and found them helpful. Top to bottom took about 5.5 hours. The walk down was more difficult than expected only because I am not used to walking down such a hilly path. All in all we enjoyed ourselves.

What an amazing hike! At first the sky was full of fog. When the sky opened we had super scenery in front of us. I felt safe all the way up and down. Total walking time 2h 50 min, total time with brakes 5 h 50 min.

For a sports enthusiast, a not so difficult, short climb from Mygerou. First part is paved, dangerous in descending because of possibility of slipping. It took me just over 2 Hr to get to the top. A lot of wind in the turtleneck just before the top. Wind protection clothing is not a luxury. Fantastic view over a large part of Crete: White Mountains (Mt Pachnes) of Chania, City of Rethymno, island of Gavdos (Lybian Sea), Iraklion, Dikti Mountains. Descended in 1.5 Hr.

Was our first time up a mountain. Highest mountain in Estonia is 318 m above sea level compared to Psiloritis which is 2456 m so it was completely unique experience. The walking sticks and water that were given really paid off. Our guide was really nice and helpful. The view was amazing and making it to the top felt even better. Certainly really great choice of acitivity if you are looking to do more besides enjoying beaches and sun.
