What To Expect
Pozzo Della Cava - Complesso Archeologico
A fascinating underground journey in the medieval district of Orvieto, through caves full of Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance archaeological artefacts, unearthed thanks to the hard work of the family who owns it. The well is a huge hole in the tuff excavated by Pope Clement VII between 1527 and 1530 expanding an Etruscan well; closed to the public in 1646 and rediscovered after centuries of neglect. In the nine caves around the well you can see alsto a medieval pottery workshop with numerous majolica artefacts and ceramicists’ tools, some small medieval pits used to dispose of rubbish, an Etruscan cistern, a Medieval winecellar and the remains of some ancient Etruscan burial tombs.

5.00The Pozzo della Cava was a true surprise. I knew it was beautiful, but I never expected to appreciate it even more than the Pozzo di San Patrizio. Built in 1530 on earlier structures, it is not just a well, but a true archaeological complex in the depths of the city. It consists of three underground levels, the central one characterized by seven communicating rooms from different eras, each with its own function. It is very interesting to understand the origins of Orvieto's ceramic art, with the ancient kilns for firing, the pits for discarding poorly made items, the ancient furnaces, and the third firing chamber, called Muffola, made of concrete and tuff blocks. Even more impressive are the last two rooms, used as tuff quarries, where the blocks for the construction of the above residential structures were extracted. You can see the rough walls and the holes where wedges were inserted to prepare the dimensions of the tuff blocks to be extracted, ultimately leading to the room used as a necropolis. What can I say, a true journey through time and history, which I recommend not to miss when visiting Orvieto.

4.00This is a shorter self guided tour. My husband found it interesting. I didn’t as much. Staff was friendly and they had a nice courtyard at the end. There was food available but it was closed when we visited.

5.00I didn t know this complex existed. Yet we often come to Orvieto. A wonder that cannot be described. You have to see her. Mr. Marco a well, it must be said, of culture. It's beautiful.

3.00There was not much to the self guided tour. We thought we were going under the city to see how the aquifers worked, when it is just a small museum area.

3.00It's a fair walk from the Piazza del popolo. It was interesting though I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it. The artefacts on display were somewhat repetive, as this site used to be kiln( about 2500 yrs ago).
