In a labyrinth that once comprised more than 20,000 corridors, an experienced guide takes you underground to see the names and drawings of people who worked here every day a few hundred years ago. Did you know that with a capacity of 50,000 people,, the expansice cave network was able to provide shelter for many of Maastricht’s residents during the Second World War. An evacuation area with electric lighting, a public address system, a bakery, toilets, chapels, a small hospital, water pumps, and many more facilities were all constructed underground, though never put into full use. Remnants of them can still be seen.

We booked this last minute on the way to Maastricht having no idea what was in store and it was amazing! Gilbert took us around and showed us his favourite drawings and the caves themselves were huge and filled with hundreds of years of history! He took us around and told us many fascinating stories that took place in the caves, joked around with us and overall we had a brilliant time! Definitely going to do it again when we bring the family.

What a fun experience this is! Super beautiful caves with a rich history, hugely interesting. Together with my boyfriend I went and it is a nice activity for a weekend away. Our tourguide John was a gem and we laughed at him because of his energetic attitude and fun way of telling. Conclusion: totally fun!

A stunning experience to walk through this underground limestone quarry. You see century-old traces of work and equally old traces of visitors, i.e. graffiti. Wim, our guide, has a profound knowledge, not only of the mining / stone-breaking activities but also of the geological processes and historical events. Is literally a cool experience: 11°C constantly. You better do this on a very hot day. However, it also works well at rainy conditions as there is quite a roof above your head😉
