Discovering Matera, the city of the Sassi which has the title of European Capital of Culture for 2019 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient stony districts are characterized by houses carved into the limestone rock and rock churches that make it unique in the world. This natural conformation, which evokes biblical scenarios, has always made them ideal sets for important films, most recently the film by Ben Hur.

A pleasant and knowledgeable guided tour, complete and detailed. Thanks to Benedetto, who shared a wealth of information about this city that we would not have understood otherwise. Truly compliments to Benedetto for the thorough and engaging explanation.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Visiting Matera is an extraordinary experience, but doing it with Grazia from the Passi nei Sassi association makes it truly unforgettable. From the very first minutes, her passion, preparation, and genuine love for this unique city are evident. With expertise and great storytelling ability, she guided us through the alleys of the Sassi, narrating its history, traditions, and extraordinary rebirth, alternating historical information, curiosities, and anecdotes that made the visit engaging and never boring. Thanks to her explanations, we learned to see Matera with different eyes, understanding the significance of the cave houses, rock churches, the water collection system, and the daily life of the ancient inhabitants. Every stop became an opportunity to discover a hidden detail or an even more breathtaking view. Grazia is an exceptionally prepared guide, approachable, friendly, and capable of engaging the entire group with enthusiasm and professionalism. Her narration conveys emotions and allows one to fully appreciate a city that is not only beautiful to see but also rich in history and culture. If you visit Matera, trust Passi nei Sassi. Heartfelt thanks for allowing us to experience Matera, and not just visit it.

The guide did not do any justice to Matera, I got more information from asking the internet… she does not seem to have a good sense of history of the place. And simply pointing out “caves here” and “caves there”.

Great Experience! It’s such a beautiful place with interesting history that you wouldn’t necessarily know without going on a tour! The tour stops at some great places including a visit to one of the grotto houses. The tour also ran to schedule even with the million questions from the group. Take water and a hat! It is hotttt and there isn’t much shade on the tour. The tour is also maybe not for someone who isn’t too mobile! Matera is quite hilly and you go down some steep and slippery steps! Overall a great tour!
