Step back in time and discover the charm, stories, and secrets of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods on foot.
Alfama is not only one of the oldest and most picturesque districts in Lisbon, but also was one of the only neighbourhoods, which was not destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. And so, the city still has kept its quaint familial charm. In fact, the moniker of this neighbourhood comes from the Arabic ‘Al-hamma’ meaning ‘hot fountains’ or ‘baths’.
It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, known for its narrow streets, traditional architecture, and vibrant multicultural community.
It was once home to Lisbon's Moorish population during the Middle Ages. Over time, the neighborhood became a melting pot of cultures, with people from all over the world settling there.

They cancelled the tour at the meeting place at the start time. Tarek, the awkward and unfriendly supervisor, just told me they weren’t going to run this tour - or the tour I had booked tomorrow at Belém. Clearly they show lots of tours as available but they just don’t bother doing them if not enough people book. It’s a huge waste of time - there are at least 2 other companies doing the exact same thing in the same square, and so they’ve totally wasted my time with their cynical approach.
