First of all, we cannot praise or thank Shubham Pandey enough for being such an excellent & knowledgeable guide as well as for the highest quality pictures during our tour. The incredible and classic mirrored pictures he took of the Taj being reflected in the reflecting pools with and without us in them were worth the price of our tour alone. And his unhurried yet detailed commentary & guiding were all icing over the top of the cake. The classic picture of Lady Diana Spencer seated in front of the Taj Mahal was taken at sunrise because that’s when the sun plays off its white marble top and even changes the marble colors to hues of orange and red. So, we too needed to get there before sunrise to see and be photographed with the same backdrop. So, Shubham arrived early and met us in the lobby of the Oberoi Agra Resort before 5 am. And the was the right time because it enabled us to get to the Taj, get oriented a bit and be ready for the sunrise. And he spent the day explaining its history and that of Agra as we went from place to place. He made our visit to Agra truly one of the highlights of our travels over 50 years on 6 continents! There are photographers on the grounds of the Taj who will take pictures of you & the Taj, but they cost $30 to $100 USD. However, Shubham literally took the same quality pictures with our own camera phones at no added cost. And our tour cost also included our admission fees, our comfortable air-conditioned car, a driver and him. By midmorning we took a break to our hotel for 90 minutes or so and went to the Agra Fort. The Agra (Red) Fort, which we didn’t know anything about before our tour, is a Mughal fort completed in 1573 and is more accurately described as a fortified walled city. It is made of red materials and is massive and beautiful. It is 1.6 miles NW of the Taj Mahal and much of it is still used by the Indian Army. After the Agra Fort we had lunch at a local restaurant, which was very good. Then we were taken to a marble shop which saw a demonstration of making inlays into marble by hand using the same techniques used to build the Taj Mahal. We saw some gorgeous tables, coasters, and other every day items made of marble and gem stones. We also visited an Indian/Persian hand-woven rug shop and saw how their rugs are made. Not surprisingly, we could have bought items at both locations, but they respected our decision not to. The Baby Taj was a mausoleum regarded as the model for the Taj Mahal itself. It is a Mughal mausoleum built in the 1620s about 3 mile from the Taj Mahal. It was built primarily from red sandstone with marble decorations but in the second phase, they used white marble and pietra dura inlay. This latter design then was most elegantly realized in the Taj Mahal itself. After that we went across the river to the backside of the Taj Mahal and watched it change colors as the sun set. What a glorious day this was! And we got back to our resort around 6 pm. It was a long day but paced very well with the heat and walking to include a restful break at our hotel between touring, a peaceful and restorative lunch, and a relaxed ending as sunset approached to see the Taj from 180 degrees from the morning.

We had an excellent experience with our tour guide Subh in Agra. He took care of everything; from arranging tickets to guiding us smoothly through the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort—so we could fully enjoy the visits without any stress. He clearly showed us where to go, took wonderful photos for us and with us, and shared the stories of both monuments in great detail, explaining the history of the buildings and the lives connected to them in a very captivating way. After the sightseeing, he also showed us some nice local shopping opportunities, which was a great addition to the day. Very professional, knowledgeable, and engaging throughout. Overall, a fabulous day in Agra together! We would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Agra.
