Miradouro Da Lagoa Do Fogo
The Lagoon of Fire is one of the most impressive natural treasures on the island of São Miguel. It is a lagoon of volcanic origin that has been protected as a Natural Reservation since 1974. It is located in the interior of the island of São Miguel, at the bottom of the crater of an extinct volcano, within the great volcanic mass of the Serra de Água de Pau. This lagoon is the highest on the island, about 575 meters above sea level. In addition, it is very large; it measures approximately 2 km long and 1 km wide, with a total area of 1,360 hectares. Isn't that impressive? In fact, in 2012, Praia da Lagoa do Fogo was recognized as one of the 7 wonders of Portugal in the category of "wild beach".

What a great way for a solo traveller to see more of the island than just the city! Manuel from Pure Azores was a delightful guide, considerate of all his passengers and full of wonderful history, geography, culture, cuisine and all given with care and humour. The full day, ours with little sun and a lot of cloud, took in the wonderful landscape and dramatic shorelines. Villages bustling with locals and even a traditional Easter promenade of men wearing traditional shawls walking from village to village. We stopped at many viewpoints to take in the island’s changing topography and Manuel regaled us with the history and stories relating to each area. We ate a delicious local cuisine lunch in the town of Sete Cidades and as he promised, the cloud lifted for us to see Fogo in the sunshine. Great wnd to a wonderful day. Thank you Manuel. I couldn't recommend this Pure Azores trip more highly.
