Can you imagine how long it takes for ice to carve a 300m deep gorge in rock? It's really quite incomprehensible, and an awesome sight to see. This is one truly impressive feat of nature.

You can now walk 1km into the gorge via a wooden walkway and explore the unique rock formations and tunnels. You will find information points along the way to learn about the unique history of the Glacier Canyon.

This is the perfect all-weather activity for all ages. It's easy to access and can be added to most of your day trips in the area.

Glacier Canyon - Gletscherschlucht

It took 250 million years for Mother Nature to carve out this incredible canyon! Sadly the lower glacier no longer exists, but the canyon itself is now thriving as a popular destination for a unique sensory walk through its exposed rock galleries and tunnels. The rushing water cascades freely from the mountains into the Lütschine River below, sometimes causing a sudden rush of wind through the canyon and a rapid temperature flux as rays of light reflect along the steep walls.

  • Educational, fun, and a nice walk!

This was a fun and interesting walk through the canyon learning about the surrounding glaciers. It’s an out and back walk of about an hour. We didn’t take the bus and tried to walk back to Grindewald instead, but this isn’t a great idea. Traffic, steep hills, and there aren’t sidewalks the entire time. We had just done a big hike so we started tired ;) overall would recommend this activity to learn about the history of the glaciers and how they are being impacted by climate change. Went with a 12 year old!

  • For the cost and travel to get to it I wouldn’t recommend it.

Nice walk through the canyon but not a lot to see. It’s called glacier canyon but the glaciers disappeared a long time ago so it’s just rocks. There’s a rope net over a section of the canyon which you can walk and jump on. It is overpriced for what you get. To get to it from Grindelward take bus #122 which is free for tourists. From Grindelward train station or gondola station you will need to take bus 121 or 123 to get to Grindelwald town centre and then catch bus 122. These three buses are free ( but not bus 120 from the train station).

Great walk along the canyon beautiful among the rocks and the river, the canyon is stunning well worth visting a real photographers dream, hard to belive how Global Warming has affected the Glacier which has unfortunately disappeared, May for me was a great time to visit as there was no overcrowding, the walkway is narrow, well worth the money, walk took about 21/2hrs as there are many photo opportunites along the way,

  • Hike deep into the heart of the Alps

Let's start by asking the questions: is this for real or just a manufactured tourist attraction? And, is it worth it? The answers to both are definitely yes! Take the #122 bus from Grindelwald or just hike up the hill to the Canyon, buy a ticket (21 Francs CH) and head into it. Etched from now long gone glaciers, the path up it leads deep into the canyon. Lining its walls are waterfalls, rock tumbles, and more. And the path keeps going deeper, deeper, deeper, resulting in us actually having had a fairly substantial, and yet well marked, hike deep into the heart of the Alps. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I highly recommend. There is also a restaurant at the base where you can grab a sandwich (delicious!) and something to drink (hot chocolate on a drizzly day for us), as well as a public bathroom.

  • Spiders web makes this extra special

We wondered if it was a good idea to visit one hour before closing on a rather grey drizzly day. We decided to go for the sake of our 15 year old who was interested in doing the spider web. Fortunately we had a car as it would be a killer walk down to the gorge. It felt very different to the Aareschlucht Gorge (which was green and pretty). This was much greyer, more raw and geological, with interesting panels about how the ice has changed over the centuries and a display of minerals in the entrance area. Some information about where those minerals were found would have been useful. This feels more like a base for activities than Aareschlucht did. We were lucky to see someone doing the Canyon Swing - something like a 120ft drop at 80kmh. Terrifying. She was swinging like a pendulum in front of us (still smiling). Glad we went as, at that late time, the spider web was virtually empty. I don’t think it would have been much fun with lots of people on it.

  • Expensive for what it is

Although impressive, very expensive at CHF 21 each. Aareschlucht at nearby Meiringen is half the price and better, in my view.

  • You can skip it

It's a beautiful place, but it isn't realy a must-visit. You can skip this place easily if you want. You have a lot of similar places in Switzerland.

  • Interesting but quite expensive.

A really interesting geological site and fun to walk on the ‘spider web’ over the river! It’s quite expensive considering it’s only a walk on a pathway in the canyon.

  • Amazing geology!

Got there for opening time, which meant we experience the canyon without crowds! The power of the water is immense, the gorge is impressive and I enjoyed the web! Not cheap but then nothing is in Switzerland! Nice coffee when we finished :-)
