Hiking around the Caldeira is an experience you should not miss out if you visit Faial. This collapsed volcanic cone is one of the main landmarks of Faial. With 2 km in diameter it is an impressive reminder of the force of nature. The trail around the perimeter is about 7 km long and can be done in two to three hours.
The hike around the Caldeira is physically easy, but those suffering from vertigo might find a couple of well secured passages a bit of a challenge. This hike is only worthwhile to be done if the weather is clear and the wind is not too strong. You will be rewarded with stunning views of the neighboring islands and the untouched nature.

5.00We loved our hiking excursion around the caldera. Our guide was great: knowledgeable, passionate and attentive to our needs from start to finish. He knew how to make the walk even more interesting thanks to his explanations and his good humor. The lunch provided was delicious and perfectly organized. We highly recommend this excursion to anyone visiting Horta (Faial). An authentic and rewarding experience that we loved.

5.00The Caldeira hike is not to be missed while on Faial. It offers fabulous views and Andreas was an outstanding guide. His knowledge of the island is extensive - hardly a topic he could not discuss and share. We enjoyed a delightful tailgate lunch after the hike. Truly one of the highlights of our trip to the Azores. Highly recommend !
