We created the camp to provide a quality experience with excellent service, as we want our guests to experience the adventure of Acatenango without having a bad time. Our food portions are generously sized and made with sustaining ingredients, as we know firsthand how demanding this adventure is. The camp is new and very well-designed. It's also very well-located, with a surprising view of the the protagonist of this adventure, the Fuego Volcano.

Our camp is called IXCANUL, which in the Mayan language refers to the internal force of the mountain, which can erupt at any moment. Our goal is for you to fall in love with our country and make you want to come back again to create unforgettable experiences.

  • Best guide ever!

This was one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve ever had! If you’re considering this tour, our biggest recommendation is to rent a porter—it makes the hike much more manageable and allows you to enjoy the experience even more. A huge shoutout to our guide, Paolo! He was hands down one of the best guides we’ve ever had. From the very beginning, he genuinely cared about our safety and well-being. He was incredibly personable, shared so much interesting information throughout the trek, and constantly motivated us to keep pushing forward when things got tough—and trust us, you’ll definitely need that encouragement on this hike! His positive attitude and kindness truly made the experience unforgettable. We also want to recognize our driver, Nicky, who was friendly, professional, and easy to talk to. He made great conversation and helped make the entire trip feel comfortable from start to finish. The team made this adventure so much more enjoyable, and we’re so grateful for the memories. When we return to Guatemala, we will absolutely be booking this tour again. Highly recommend!

One of the coolest experiences of my life. I’m an avid hiker and been to 18,000+ feet a few times so the Altitude didn’t bother me as much. Guide was great, the beds were comfortable and the food was adequate. Please come prepared and know what you’re getting yourself into. Wear proper footwear and enjoy the journey.

  • Worth every minute of the Pain!;)

This was the hardest hike I've ever done but watching Fuego errupt was worth every minute of pain. This is not for the faint of heart as the hike to the top is 98% straight uphill with very few flat spots to catch your breath. That being said, Leo, Eric, and our other guides were so encouraging and always happy to stick by you if you needed an extra minute or 5 to recover. They made the trek and overnight stay a fun and upbeat time! There are Porters available for a fee that will carry your bags alongside you during the hike if you want but be warned - they will put you to shame with their strength and climbing ease! ;) The food that is included in the tour may not look like much at first but it was actually almost perfect. We brought a few extra snacks but you definitely don't need to overdo it. (After all that strenuous activity you may not be as hungry as you think but everyone is different) They also accommodate for different allergies or dietary restrictions which was great b/c my daughter has a peanut allergy and they normally put a bag of peanuts in but traded hers out for something else. (Everyone else still got the peanuts in their bag FYI.) Do bring extra water but there is at least one stop along the way where you can buy more - but it's a little more expensive b/c they have to haul it up there. At least one of the toilets on the way was pretty awful but the one at base camp was decent as far as camp toilets go. My husband and daughter did the extra Fuego hike with Leo and loved the proximity to the volcano but the hike back up almost did them in. If Acetenango was hard, the Fuego hike was worse. HOWEVER, there is very little most of us will see in life as cool as an active volcano errupting every 5 minutes or so. There is also the option to access the very top of Acetenango which apparently has even more amazing views but our guides told us that hike was more difficult that the extra one to Fuego. You can do either, both, or neither. This company was fabulous to work with and had everything we needed to rent if we didn't bring it. If I had the guts to do the hike a second time I'd definitely choose them again!

  • INCREDIBLE experience and ERIC is the most incredible guide on those volcanos

I can not say enough great things about this experience and it was made that much better by the absolute best guide ERIC!! ERIC is the reason my husband and I were able to complete the hike and then we even choose to do Fuego, which was even harder but ERIC kept giving us all the positive reinforcement, encouragement and showed the most patience. He was so positive each time we took a little break and kept pushing us to keep going. He knew we could do it before we realized it! He was so friendly, open to our funny questions and kept giving us real expectation of how much we had already accomplished and how much more time we had to keep pushing. Knowing that he was so understanding and patient then seeing pictures from the summit of Fuego, we knew we would be able to do it! Great communication in advance, prep that morning and then taking the hour bus to an exclusive start, everything was exactly how explained. Jeido the other guide was great as well and cooked some great dinner and hot chocolate. My husband and I enjoyed our bedding and were able to get some rest. Very thankful to Eric and Jeido based the time of our Fuego hike on the weather. Instead of going immediately after arriving to base, like many other camps did then at summit they saw nothing. We were thankful to go at 2am to then have amazing lava views and sunrise views as we departed. 1000x would recommend this company and these guides.

Awesome experience. Great guides. I also loved that they drove us through a shortcut where we knocked about an hour and a half off the hiking time.

SO WORTH IT!!! my boyfriend and I booked this tour a week before going and had 0 prep time. Definitely suggest if you are going to use the stairmaster & walk on extreme incline prior to going. It’s difficult either way. There was always a guide with us & other parts of the group to keep with everyone’s pace. They have good breaks & are really kind. They also let my boyfriend rent size 12 hiking shoes for like $10-12 usd. Def recommend them!! Thank you carlos, paolo, & vida!!!

Absolutely the best experience from our trip!! Our hiking guides Leo, Erick, and David were fabulous! They were incredibly knowledgable of the route, encouraged us with enthusiasm and music, and provided us all of the necessary equipment to be safe and comfortable on our hike. To ensure we had the best experience, they monitored the weather for our extra hike to the Fuego volcano so we could ascend when the sky was clear and see eruptions. (We met other travelers that booked with other groups who told us their guides took them up regardless of the weather and they completed the difficult hike with no volcano view.) We truly appreciated our guides transparency for the weather to give us a terrific and rewarding experience!! Cannot recommend GT Experience enough. Would recommend everyone to complete the hike with them!

The hardest and most rewarding experience! Our guides were incredible. Lèo, Erick, and David were all so encouraging and helpful through the hardest parts of the hike. They provided plenty of food and we took many breaks, making the hike enjoyable. The people we met in our group were amazing aswell. I can’t recommend Experience GT enough!

AMAZING experience with them SPECIFICALLY!!! The whole crew was so friendly and helpful!!! If you’re not an experienced or active person, you can do it! they take a lot of breaks along the way and provide food, the cabins were great, they provide breakfast BEFORE going to the hike and beanies, jacket, headlights and hiking sticks are free, but you can rent basically everything at their place, but my favorite about EXPERIENCE GT wasn’t all that, but the crew! they treat you like family! Shoutout to my favorite, Paolo, AMAZING instructor, as well as for Roberto and Jaime!!! all of them were very kind, caring and supportive!
