Kochi Castle
Known as "the best castle on the Nankaido (road)," is a symbol of Kochi City. Currently, there are only 12 castles from the pre-Edo period in Japan, but Kochi Castle is one of the most precious castles. The current main tower was rebuilt in August 1747. The greatest feature of Kochi Castle is that the cohesive entirely of the main building group, with the Tenshu, Goten, and Corridor Bridge, all being completely present along with the stone wall and so on. The gazebo on the top floor of the castle tower overlooks Kochi city.
Hirome Ichiba
Large hall with food stalls from around 40 various restaurants, plus souvenir shops and other shops. Perhaps you will enjoy some of the famous “Katsuo Tataki,” which is seared bonito fish. It is recommended that you put salt and sliced garlic on it before tasting. Do enjoy the local foods unique to Kochi.

Our tour guide, Michi, was excellent! We had lots of email correspondence prior to the tour to ensure the itinerary and our dietary requirements would be met! We took public transportations to each site. We enjoyed the itinerary and our vegetarian lunch ahead got us. Everything went smoothly and pleasantly. She helped us with calling a taxi and told the driver where we were going. Everything was done professionally. With some extra time, she even took us to an Arcade near-by where I got a used Kimono jacket at a good price and other souvenirs. We highly recommend this tour!

We did the 1 day Highlights of Kochi with Rimo. She met us promptly at the port, then we travelled by taxi to see the sights. We started at Makino Botanical Garden. Being avid gardeners we enjoyed browsing through the gardens and learning about the botanist Tomitaro Makino. We then walked to Chikurinji Temple. My partner was excited to see the pagoda! Our next stop was Kochi Castle. Rimo climbed the castle stairs with me, sharing her expert knowledge about the history and architecture. Having worked up an appetite, we stopped at the Hirome Market to sample some Kochi specialties. Rimo’s recommendations were excellent! We had a wonderful time eating and chatting some more. As we wound down the day we browsed in one of the very long, covered malls. We picked up some local items…like mandarins and a kimono! During the course of the day Rimo took picture of us and emailed a photo album that very evening. What a great momento of our wonderful day in Kochi! Rimo is an excellent guide. Because of her, Kochi is a very memorable highlight of our trip to Japan.

We did a highlights of Kochi tour with Rimo. She met us promptly at the port and we visited some wonderful places in the city, including: Makino Botanical Garden, Chikurinji Temple, Kochi Castle & Hirome Market. Every place we visited Rimo was by our side informing us about the history & details a local would know. She even climbed the castle with us! Rimo took our pictures at each site to make a photo album, which she emailed to us shortly after the tour! We enjoyed a fabulous lunch together at the market, with recommendations by a local. The specialty of the area is tataki (seared bonito), garlic ramen, tempura baby shrimp, deep fried seaweed (don’t know the local name of some food!). All delicious, sprinkled with great conversation. This was an exceptional tour. Rimo is a delight, and made our experience in Kochi most memorable.

We had a wonderful one-day experience in Kochi learning about the culture and history of this quiet Japanese city. Special highlights included visiting a Samurai residence and slipping into Edo-period costumes, enjoying a savory lunch at a bustling local market, and stopping at the Kochi Yosakoi Museum, where we dressed in vibrant costumes and learned how to the wield wooden clappers, dancing to Yosakoi music. Our path eventually led us to Kochi Castle steeped in history and one of the rare survivors of the Edo-period. A truly remarkable and unforgettable day.

Seeing a combination of ancient buildings mixed with the more modern shopping centers made for an amazing day. The botanical garden had a lot of rare species, the castle and temples were amazing historical time pieces. I was more excited than I should have been to ring a bell at Chikurinji Temple. The food hall and local markets provided more delicious food than I could eat, including ramen unique to Kochi. Our tour guide Geoffrey knew little facts and tidbits about everything that made the journey unique From architecture information to local food spots, to places to go to pick up random items we wanted for souvenirs. He was the most informed guide I encountered on a 3 week trip spanning 7 different countries and 13 cities. His kindness and sense of humor truly made this trip stand out...... and he spoke better English than I did.

Our guide Rie (Peach) was extremely organized and knowledgeable, and all the places we visited were enjoyable to see: the botanical gardens (for me, a highlight of my trip to Japan) and a nearby temple, Hirome market, a great Japanese restaurant, and Kochi Castle (definitely worth visiting if you are OK with climbing lots of steps). Overall an ideal day in Kochi.
