According to the Ramayana, Hakgala is believed to be one of the places connected to Sita Devi’s captivity during her stay in Lanka. The name Hakgala is derived from “Yaksha Gala” or “Hakka Gala”, meaning Jaw Rock, and legend says it was formed when Hanuman dropped a part of the mountain while carrying the Sanjeevani herb. The area is also believed to be part of the Ashoka Vatika, the pleasure garden where Sita Devi was kept by King Ravana. Today, the lush greenery and exotic plants of Hakgala reflect the beauty of the ancient garden described in the epic.

Sita Temple

The Seetha Amman Temple, located near Nuwara Eliya, is one of the most important sites associated with the Ramayana in Sri Lanka. It is believed to be the place where Sita Devi was held captive by King Ravana. According to legend, the nearby stream bears footprints believed to belong to Lord Hanuman, and the temple marks the spot where Lord Rama, Sita Devi, and Lakshmana reunited after her rescue. The temple stands as a symbol of devotion, patience, and divine love, making it a key stop on the Sri Lanka Ramayana Trail.

According to the Ramayana, after Lord Rama defeated Ravana and rescued Sita Devi, she was asked to prove her purity. It is believed that Sita Devi undertook the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) at Divurumpola.

Kataragama Temple

According to Ramayana legends, Lord Skanda (Murugan/Kartikeya)—the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati—played a role in the final phase of the war between Lord Rama and King Ravana. It is believed that Lord Skanda assisted Lord Rama during the battle, and after Ravana’s defeat, he settled in Kataragama, where the temple was later established

Galle

Rumassala Hill, overlooking Galle and the southern coast, is steeped in Ramayana legend. It is believed Hanuman rested here while carrying the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshmana. The hill is also surrounded by lush forests with medicinal plants, offering scenic views and spiritual significance.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, located near Colombo, is an important site connected to the Ramayana. According to legend, this is the place where Lord Rama crowned Vibhishana—the brother of King Ravana—as the King of Lanka after Ravana’s defeat.
