Savanna La Mar

Savanna-la-Mar was originally established as a settlement in Spanish Jamaica. In 1780, the town was completely destroyed by a powerful hurricane known as Savanna-la-Mar hurricane. It was rebuilt, as the port was an important part of the Atlantic trade in sugar, slaves and other goods. After Great Britain abolished slavery in 1833 and before the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865, its officials in the Caribbean colonies, at times ordered the examination of slaves on American ships that happened to come to its Caribbean ports, to see if they wanted to stay in the colony and gain freedom, or return with the ship to the United States and slavery. In the cases of the Enterprise at Bermuda in 1835 and the Creole at Nassau in 1841-1842, more than 200 slaves gained freedom. On 20 July 1855, Jamaicans boarded the United States Brig Young America, which had docked into Savanna-la-Mar.

Black River

What a memorable day it has been so far! Now you are at the Riverside Dock where you will have lunch. After lunch, you will meet with your Safari Tour Guide who is very knowledgeable & well prepared - eager to take you on a wild journey up the Black River. There you will get all the information on the Black River and its wildlife, including endemic bird species, crabs, rare or endemic plants such as water lilies and others - North American crocodiles and Tarpons also occupy their space in the Black River. Get your cameras ready as your Safari Captain call the crocodiles, feed them chicken meat and pet them - no, your tour guide is not crazy but they have an excellent relationship with their friends from the Safari and are ready to share their experience and expertise with you! You might even see local fishers snorkeling the river collecting their crab traps or spear fishing right there among the crocodiles and other wildlife - and no, they're not crazy! It's just a way of life!

Make sure the driver picking you up is there for you, they asked 5 times if we were Amire and we said no and gave our name, they said ok this your driver. We got almost 30 minutes away and driver got a call asking if he picked up Amire. He asked us we said no and they said oh wrong driver and he had to turn around and take us back. Now i will say this driver was very nice, pointing out sights and history. Once we got back the driver that was there for us was very rude, his name was Orville. He didn't say anything hardly, he made personal stops, even stopped to get himself some soup as we sat. Music was loud had to shout among ourselfs to hear each other. When we got to YS Falls he just let us out said be back here by 12. All the other tours coming in, thier drivers took them to where they needed to be. Once we got back we could not find our driver and had to ask around till he was found. Then rushed us to our lunch at the Black River area. The guide on boat was very nice and even picked us girls a flower. It started to rain and he gave us rain gear. Once we got back the rude driver proceeded to take us back and again made several personal stops. Overall YS Falls is worth seeing however black river is just a few crocodiles and birds. Also be prepared with a few snacks and water.

unlike other reviewers, we actually thought the boat ride was cooler than the falls. The fall require the lifeguards to help you across the falls and it’s somewhat limiting. When we went, the river was brown and the falls were very strong because of the rains. There are some nice pools, but it’s an awful long drive for a pools. We enjoyed the boat ride very much, however, and lunch there was really good. our driver razor was a ton of fun and took good care of us.

Experience was good, however they cancelled last minute the day before and wanted to re-book for another day which we did however it was an inconvenience as we had to move other paid plans around to now fit this experience in on a day we never planned for
