The Mary Valley Rattler is one of Queensland’s most iconic heritage steam train experiences, capturing the Gympie region’s rich history while offering visitors a contemporary tourism attraction and the beauty of the spectacular Mary Valley landscape.
This 3 hour, 40km journey, in a beautifully restored C17 steam train, is an iconic experience like no other. Departing from the Historic Gympie Station, you travel through rich agricultural farmland right into the heart of the picturesque Mary Valley.
On arrival in the quaint town of Amamoor, here you can disembark your carriage and make your way to a viewing area to watch the train engine as it turns on the turntable. Enjoy a short stay to explore the Amamoor Village Green before reboarding your assigned carriage for your return journey to the Gympie Station.
On board, volunteer guides provide a wealth of historical detail about the trains and the region as you enjoy the views and the nostalgia of travel from times past.

1.00Experience advertised as From Hervey Bay, the thing is the meeting point is 100 minutes drive away so I couldn't join the tour

5.00A great way to experience some Australian history and countryside all whilst relaxing on a lovely steam train. The day was a pleasant enjoyable day for adults/Couples families and friends. The Volunteers were knowledgeable about the train, tracks and area history. Also they were a lot of fun. We took the Sunday journey which also had a wee liqueur and wine tasting on the way home with some lovely cheeses too just for an extra $5AUD, well worth it. Lots of stops to get some nibbles and a coffee too.
A really fun and interesting experience.

5.00A really fun experience, listening to the clatter of the engine and the steam whistle, having steam stream past the windows! The scenery was lovely, the stops at Amamoor and Dagun were great to stop and have a drink and something to eat. All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this for a morning activity.

5.00We had a fantastic evening aboard the Mary River Rattler for a Murder Mystery set in the 1920’s everyone dressed up and joined in the fun. We saw the body and heard and saw the clues. To find out who did it you will need to go 🥰

5.00Mother daughter annual holiday saw us taking a trip down memory lane. From the minute we arrived at Gympie station we felt welcome & excited about our day ahead. The volunteers were soo friendly, helpful & full of knowledge. The train ride was so nostalgic - the smells & sounds. The views were exceptional - such a relaxing time. I can’t thank everybody enough for a wonderful time.

5.00The old train is just beautiful, and they are so well looked after. The trip through the Mary valley is stunning. The staff members in both the booking desk and on the train very knowledgeable. Not the mention the warm date scones which you can add to your ticket. Yummo!
