Higuey

We will visit the Higuey's local food market where you will discover fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats that come directly from the community and farms in the region. Here is where local people normally buy their groceries to cook their food, they also buy groceries in bodegas or big super markets but poor people come more often to this local market beause they can find fresh food at a fair price.

Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia

This is one of the most visited monuments in Latin America and the most popular place to see in town is the Basilica Catedral Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia dedicated to the virgin of la Altagracia, the construction and design were done by 2 french architects named Andre Jacques Dunoyer and Pierre Dupre, they were chosen by an international contest to do it in 1949. The Basilica was built in the center of the city with a structural design of a Latin cross, the main door is made of bronze with a gold wash of 24 Carats and it has a bell tower with 24 bells made of bronze, the most remarkable thing of t structure is the large arcs that represent the figure of Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia. There was a big cross that hurricane David destroyed in 1979 and it was put again in 2014.
