The Gros Piton Hike begins with the retrieval of the guests between the times of 6:20 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. From there, they drive through the city of Castries, then up the picturesque Morne Fortune. Guests have their cameras on hand. The drive continues through the Roseau Valley, which has a view of the Banana Plantation. Through two old villages they shall travel, Anse La Raye and Cannaries. Lastly, the guests pass through the town of Soufriere and onto the foot of the mountain, Gros Piton. Each guest is given a bottle of water, a stick and a waiver to sign before commencing the hike. For every four guests one guide is appointed. The first part of the climb is a moderate one. The second half of the climb is strenuous. I was so excited for this excursion; in fact, it’s why we went to St Lucia. But this whole experience was a bit of a let down. The van was supposed to pick us up at 6:40 but was late due to picking up guests at another resort, which we were told they were late. We then stopped by a store to pick up supplies, which was appreciated but pushed the time further. It may be more beneficial to strongly suggest guests bring snacks and plenty of water rather than make a stop. We were one of the last, or maybe even the last, groups to arrive. The timestamp on my final picture before beginning the hike was 10:09, and we didn’t get started for a bit after that. By the time we began, the guides (who are a different company altogether) seemed to be impatient. The first guide took off right away. Didn’t introduce herself or anything, just motioned for us to follow and started hauling up the rocks. We were the first couple in the group until 1/4 of the way up, if that tells you anything about our fitness level (we’re not athletes, but we are in decent shape), but began tiring after that because we were going so fast. The guide in front disappeared with another couple at that point. There was a point we weren’t even sure we were going the right way (where you do a bit of rock climbing) because the first guide was gone and the second was quite a way back with others in our group. So that made us a bit uneasy. We hit the halfway point before 11:09, so we were making decent time in less than an hour. However, the second guide got there and began heavily discouraging us from continuing. There were four of us who were determined to make it to the 3/4 point (the mango tree) at least, but we were basically told we couldn’t make it in enough time to get to the top, and that the couple in the lead would be back on their way down before we even got to the mango tree. We still tried for 10-15 more minutes but the guide kept telling us how much harder it gets, and that we’d be another 40 minutes to the mango tree. It all just felt so defeating, pressured, and rushed, and we ultimately gave up because we felt we couldn’t slow our pace. And, of course, the moment we returned, the second guide left work for the day so I guess he had better things to do. As I mentioned, I’m fully aware the guides are separate from the tour and I will absolutely leave this feedback for them if they have a Trip Advisor page, but it seems like a domino effect of being late, stopping, and arriving later than expected all resulted in impatient guides and the inability to complete the hike. On a positive note, the driver was so careful and amazing, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. But I do think the transportation, or even the pickup time, could use some adjusting to account for the guides being hurried when there are late arrivals.

The hike was strenuous but enjoyable. The guides did not try to push anyone to go faster than they felt comfortable.

We were ready for this hike, however there have been people who were absolutely not in the right confirming to climb and should have read reviews before getting into this. The climb is hard, but if you are medium to good physical condition, you can do it. It was actually fun. You feel amazing after. I went to the gym and worked out my legs the night before (what an idiot 🫣). You need a good stretch before and after the climb and you will feel great. Don’t bring too much stuff. 1 bag pack with water, sunscreen, big spray and small snacks (protein bar, fruit are great to keep your energy level up) for the family was perfect. Don’t fool yourself with running shoes, crocs (seriously I saw some people wear them), hiking shoes will make this climb much more enjoyable and less ankle injuries. Listen to the guide. They do this 3 - 4 times a week.

I am so glad I did this hike but it was very hot and difficult. Wear shoes with ankle support and make sure you bring gatorade to help with losing electrolytes. Our driver was great and got us through some tough traffic. I didnt really like the lunch but it was very authentic.

Our driver was very nice and informative along with our guides. The hike itself was challenging especially given the heat but we really enjoyed ourselves. We met a lot of great people in our tour group and we really enjoyed the authentic lunch they provided for us after the hike. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we would highly recommend!

Very tough hike but totally worth it. For me coming down was even worse than going up. Tough on the legs and knees. It's important to take a lot of water and some food as well (cereal bars, fruits, nuts) because the hike takes 4hs at least. Our guide Simone was a star!!

I nearly didn't attempt the hike due to somewhat alarmist reviews . It is a tough climb but fine if you regularly walk and gave a degree of fitness. I am 66 and arthritic but the warm climate has helped the joints. I was up and down in 4 hours. I loved the walk through the cloud forest and the views from the top are well worth the climb. Stunning 300 years old mango tree. Our guide was very friendly and we learnt much about life in St Lucia.

We had a fabulous trip with Big Rich, who took us to The Pitons, arranged lunch and then Castres. Richard is an excellent guide and driver - thanks Harvey

The excursion overall was excellent. Harris/Swiss, our driver, was entertaining along the way. The roads in St Lucia are a little rough, so it was a wild ride. Our tour guides up the mountain were great. The trek up the mountain was very steep & rocky. It was a challenge. I decided to stop halfway, not wanting to take any chances or slow down the group. My partner continued to the top. The view & experience was well worth it. My only complaint, I had to contact the company to find out what time hotel pickup was scheduled for.

This "hike" isn't a hike per se, but a climb. While amazingly beautiful, interesting, well marked and led, this is far more strenuous than advertised. It was very steep, and completely over rock, which while expected at times, the description pictures tended to dwell on flatter areas, with stairs. It was advertised as seven hours, but calculating the time from pick up to drop off, ours was 11, a significant difference! This time included taking our included meal as a takeaway and eating in the van, instead of the sit down meal. On that note though, we must credit our Driver Big Richard. He made the best of challenges, and was kind enough to speed things up at end day by offering to go and get all our meals. He was funny, informative and engaging throughout and made the long day fun. Not intending on slamming this. A fine climb and had we known that it was this challenging, we would have prepared a bit more, brought our hiking/climbing boots instead of the advertised "sneakers/running shoes". The pictures and vistas, even from the half way point where were turned back down, were amazing. Also, when we purchased the excursion, it said a climbing pole was included. At the site, the guides there advised us they were $5 each, and you could only have one. The $5 isn't the issue, but the disconnect between advertisement and reality is. Hint: Bring a local "Piton" beer with us. Pop it and toast your climb - a bartender at our resort suggested it and we did!
