Ama’s Surf School Weligama Sri Lanka was originally founded to help all those surfers who felt they had plateaued or were struggling to progress. The enthusiast who loves being in the ocean but can’t work out how to take their surfing to the next level. While for some riding broken waves in the white water suits them, for most this is just the start of a longer surfing journey fuelled by the dream of gliding along the open face of waves trimming and turning in harmony with the ocean.

For total beginners, soft surf boards are used at first, then later moving onto fibreglass boards. Whether you take a lesson or enroll on one of our Surf courses, you will learn all the core skills needed to begin safe, successful surfing: Surf safety Jump up techniques Footwork and stance Core balance techniques Turning the board Paddling out and efficient paddling Paddling technique Catching and riding unbroken waves Also, all our beginner surfing courses contain excellent background information that will really expand your surfing knowledge. Group surf lessons are aimed for beginning and intermediate surfers. Group lessons take place in waist deep water so you actually do not even have to know how to swim in order to participate. There are a maximum of 5 students to 1 instructor in a group lesson though we rarely operate at that maximum. There is always an instructor with you in the water offering tips and tricks to improve your surfing. We will share our time amongst all students by rotating around giving each person plenty of one-on-one instruction throughout the two hours.

5.00I had such a brilliant time with Ama Surf School! The instructors were super friendly, patient, and made the whole experience feel really safe and fun. They explained everything clearly, helped with technique, and were cheering us on the whole time. The beach was gorgeous, the boards were great quality, and the whole vibe was just chilled and welcoming. Whether you’re a total beginner or just brushing up your skills, you’ll walk away feeling more confident (and with some great photos!). Would definitely book again – such a highlight of the trip! 🏄♀️✨

5.00I came here for a surf lesson on a group tour and we all had the best time! The surf guides were super encouraging, friendly and passionate about teaching us to surf. Would recommend for any beginner surfers!!

5.00Me and my girlfriends did the 7 day package! There were some communication issues between ama and the hangout hostel about what was included in our package price and who to pay. Surf lessons were 10/10 very good teachers! They try to teach you as much as possibly in a very short time, can be a bit overwhelming but very good knowledge to have. The skill progression for our surfing went really fast. I injured my knee a little so I had to skip the 2 last lessons but it was fine 🏄♀️ On our 3rd lesson they even sneak filmed us to later show us the footage on what went wrong/good! That was very nice as it’s hard to realise your mistakes on the board without seeing them from 3rd person perspective. Very very nice experience to have and I will always remember my time in Weligama!

5.00We were a group of five girls who had never surfed before. Got short and good training on land first and very good follow-up further in the water. The service was spectacular and the instructors were very friendly and helpful! We also got very much for the money iom. that our hour lasted longer than we had thought.
