What makes this activity special is the use of 'onsen' (hot spring) water direct from Beppu's water sources, in order to create natural colour variations that cannot be found elsewhere. Far more than just about dyeing fabric, the experience offers a chance to discover Beppu’s rich hot spring culture through colour and imagination.

Looking for something creative but also 'quintessentially Beppu'? In this fabric-dyeing workshop held in Japan’s most famous hot spring town, you'll use local 'onsen' (hot spring) water to dye fabric, creating a beautiful, one-of-a-kind pattern to take home with you. Through the unique process, you'll witness how one colour becomes transformed into various others via natural chemical reactions caused by the mineral content of Beppu's spring water. Guided by a local instructor, fabric tea towels will be provided, however participants are welcome to bring their own fabric items to dye if they prefer to do so. This is an activity that's simple, relaxing, and suitable for both adults and children.

I had a great time learning about dyeing cloths with the onsen water and then getting to experience it myself! The teacher and people were so nice and there was someone to translate which was very helpful. I will definitely go to another event like this again.

It was a really fun experience! The staff and sensei are very nice and friendly throughout the entire workshop. I learned a lot about Japanese culture and the Onsen Dyeing art, would 10/10 come again!

First ever workshop in Beppu!!! The instructor was soooo friendly and the assistant is so pretty and cute hehe 🥹🫶🏻 I think Space Beppu is the first ever place in Japan to invent the onsen tie dye technique!!! Definitely not your usual way of “enjoying” onsen but the experience was definitely 10/10!!! 🌟🫣
