This was a fun activity with a souvenir I can actually use. I attended with my son (20) as part of a graduation present Japan Trip. The guides, Brody and Rei, were both great. They were both knowledgeable and funny, a great combination. The standard knife blade is a santoku, but they have other type available for an upgraded price (~20k yen). All the knives are made of carbon (not stainless steel), so will require more maintenance than a stainless steel blade. The same applies to the handle. Pine is the standard, but upgrades (like cherry wood) are available. It's not an amazing, high quality knife, but it is a decent, functional knife and a fun memory. I recommend it.

Great value class here which shows you how sharpening works with a pretty customisable knife you can take home! My guide was Brody and very patient with me even though I’m not the best with handcraft stuff.

This is a great way to learn how to sharpen and take care of your Japanese knives. And best, you can pick your own knife style and handle and take home. Liz did a fantastic job, very patient and good teacher. I also recommend buying the sharpening stone and getting your knife handle engraved. The price is extra but very reasonable. Great way to spend an hour in Kyoto.

Amazing experience. I was already planning to buy a knife when I saw this experience on GYG, so ai thought, why not? The knife quality seems pretty nice and they teach you how to sharp, oil and tell about kyoto and blade history in Japan. A nive souvenir from kyoto to home Wil and Bunon were very gentle and outstanding hosts, I recommend it to everyone.
