We knew we wanted to see Vianden Castle while we were in Luxembourg but were on the fence about getting there via public transit versus taking this tour. We are so happy we chose the tour!!! Not only did we get to see Vianden, we got to experience the beautiful ruins of Beaufort, see some of Luxembourg’s natural beauty on the Mullerthal trail, and learn more about Luxembourg’s history in Echternach. I can’t speak highly enough about our driver and guides. Ali, our driver, was so friendly and made sure to take us to the most scenic views on the route. Both of our tour guides, Patrick and Nicole, were knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about their country and culture. We learned so much! Worth every penny, if you’re staying in Luxembourg City and want to see Vianden this tour is a must do!

Our trip was very badly operated. The driver didn't talk, he just held his phone to inform people when they should be back at the bus. Some understood that as the time to return and some understood it as the time they had to visit the destination. As a result the group on time waited more than 30 minutes for the stragglers thus changing the schedule for the day. The non speaking driver didn't tell us there was a lunch option at the Castle so some people missed the castle, others rushed at the end as they found lunch and then didn't have time for the castle. These problems could be solved if the operator gave out a single page with the schedule and times and lunch options when the trip began. The first stop is billed as a waterfall. It's not, it's just a stream flowing over a rock for about 3 feet. We did not anticipate a naturalist guide who took us on a short forest walk and he was very informative about the geology. Second stop is a Medieval castle still very much in ruins, it was mainly a restroom stop. The main highlight was supposed to be Vianden Castle, the schedule for which as I mentioned earlier was never explained so some people saw it, some missed it trying to get lunch and some ran through it after lunch because they were never told that there was a cafe at the Castle. The Castle has been restored and it's mildly interesting. Last stop was a cute small town whose church contains a local saint. The guide provided a good story, without the guide it's just another updated older church. Ultimately I would not recommend taking this trip. Except for Vianden Castle the sights are marginal and there are better castles to visit than Vianden. Save your money.

Gabby the guide for the nature walk was excellent. Very knowledgeable and professional. Like that she stopped often to speak. Helped with the hike.

We met up with our minibus and guide Gabbylinda (This is undoubtedly not her name) on the outskirts of the city at 9.30am. We set off on the about 45 minute drive to Mullerthal, a very green and pleasant place, the nature walk wasn't really a walk due to some members of the group not being able to do it, so instead we had a brief talk about rocks and different ages of the area. From there we had a very short ride to the highest waterfall in Luxembourg, if you are picturing Niagra or Angel falls then you might want to reign in your expectation to about 10% of that size. It is very picturesque and the bridge over it is beautiful with its animal carvings but even in a country as small as Luxembourg I would have thought something bigger. Back on board the coach and next stop 15 minutes away Beaufort Chateaux, not open this time of year but I dont think we missed a great deal as we walked around the outside of this impressive building and saw everything we needed. Back on board and 30 minutes later we were at probably the highlight of the trip Castle Vianden, right on the German border. On a hill looking over the Town of Vianden this castle dating back over 700 years is in fantastic condition with great views out over the surrounding woodland. Inside the beautifully designed rooms are layouts of how the rooms may have looked. Our final stop as we followed the German border south was Ecternach for a walk around the oldest town in Luxembourg, there was a small Christmas market on and we looked around the church before heading back to the city and completing an eventful eight hours around the country.

This was a good way to get out of the city and explore more of Luxembourg. The nature walk was lovely, Patrick was fab and I was sad he was with us for such a short time. The two castles were nice to explore and impressive in their own way. What was a real bonus was being in Vianden for the annual walnut festival! We’d known this before going and therefore whizzed round the castle, to spend most of our time soaking up the atmosphere (and the nut liquor!) in the town. We think it’s a shame that the driver didn’t know this event was happening and therefore didnt alert other guests to what was happening-the nut festival was even mentioned on the audio guide so this feels like a real miss. We could had done without the final stop-maybe it was because it was a Sunday but there was very little to do apart from sit and have a drink. We’d have much rather spent longer in Vianden, but I appreciate the festival only happens once a year.

I wish I could split the rating into two parts. I would give Patrick and the brief nature part higher. I wished it would have been slightly longer as it was rushed but I enjoyed thoroughly. The rest of the tour was ok. One challenge was our “tour guide”/driver did not speak English and everyone on the tour spoke English and not French. He was a very nice gentleman, and there was a few paragraphs over an audio guide but much of the driving was in complete silence and when we arrived at castles, there was no guide but just “on your own” time at each location with confusion by all guests as what to do with our time. Since we all finished the castle in 30-40 minutes and unsure what to do with the full two hours at the stop. So for the price, just expect that it is an all day uber with a decent mini-tour of the nature walk.
