Floating over it's own reflection, the Jahaz Mahal in Mandu looks like a ship that’s about to sail. However, for centuries this ship made of stone and mortar never did. Instead, it stood floating over the twin lakes, bearing a silent witness to Mandu's long, rich and varied history.
The city of Mandu is adorned with spell-binding Afghan architecture surrounded by baobab trees, native to Africa. The grand palaces are still alive with royal romance while the gateways (darwazas) speak of a history of imperial conquests. A walk through Mandu will leave you awe-struck, the way you used to be listening to stories from grandparents.

Ship Palace (Jahaz Mahal)
This 120 metre long ' ship palace' built between the two artificial lakes, Munj Talao and Kapur. Talao, is an elegant two-storeyed palace. Probably it was built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji for his large harem. With its open pavilions, balconies overhanging the water and open terrace, Jahaz Mahal is an imaginative recreation in stone of a royal pleasure craft. Viewed on moonlit nights from the adjoining Taveli Mahal, the silhouette of the building, with the tiny domes and turrets of the pavilion gracefully perched on the terrace, presents an unforgettable spectacle.
Hindola Mahal (Swing Palace)
An audience hall also belonging to Ghiyas-ud-din's reign, it derives the name of 'Swinging Palace' from its sloping sidewalls. Superb and innovative techniques are also evident in its ornamental facade, delicate trellis work in sandstone and beautifully moulded columns. To the west of Hindola Mahal there are several unidentified buildings which still bear traces of their past grandeur. Amidst these is an elaborately constructed well called Champa Baoli which is connected with underground vaulted rooms where arrangements for cold and hot water were made. Other places of interest in this enclave are Dilawar Khan's Mosque, the Nahar Jharokha (tiger balcony), Taveli Mahal, the two large wells called the Ujali (bright) and Andheri (dark) Baolis and Gada Shah's Shop and House, all worth a visit

Mandu is situated approximately 75 km or 2 hour from Indore. There are two routes to reach this place and road condition is good on both these routes. It is recommended to visit Mandu during Nov to Feb as otherwise weather may not be conducive to roam and visit various monuments. There are number of places to visit and the best one is Jahaz Mahal which will take maximum time since there are other places/monuments inside the same perimeter. The important places are Jahaz Nahal, Jal Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Shahi Hamam, Museum, Nahar Jharokha, Champa Baodi, etc. The other places worth visiting in Mandu are Sunset Point, Lohani Caves ( not so great), Chaturbhuj Temple,Vijay Stambh, Jami Masjid,Hoshang Shah's Tomb, Baz Bahadur Mahal and Rani Roopmati Pavillion. All these places are within 7 kms. Total time required will be one day. You can enjoy the local cuisine called Dal Bafla or Dal Paniya which one can taste. Overall a great day to spend at Mandu.

Mandu is an ancient fort city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It's surrounded by stone walls dotted with darwazas (gateways). It's also known for its Afghan architectural heritage. Landmark buildings include Hoshang Shah’s Tomb, a domed marble mausoleum, and the vast Jami Masjid mosque, with courtyards framed by colonnades. The imposing, centuries-old Jahaz Mahal palace stands between 2 lakes.

Fabulous ruins. If you see the place at leisure, it requires two days to see most of the monuments. It can take more too if you are into looking at architecture of yester years. Jahaz mahal has so many buildings and each worth looking. It takes you beyond . If you can plan the trip in monsoon, the lovely gray keeps you enchanted in the backdrop of these buildings. Nowa days with hinduisation of stories around interfaith love stories, more needs to be seen and read than heard by guides. This has so much more than just a lovestory . The whole area, about radius of 50 kms is filled with Baobab trees. The fruits and seeds are sold as safed imli. Can go there again and again.
