Matsue Castle
One of Shimane’s biggest drawcards has to be Matsue Castle. There are various beautiful castles scattered all across Japan, but many of those are restorations – the original structures were destroyed by fires or earthquakes, or demolished by the new Meiji government at the close of the feudal era. Matsue Castle dates back to the early 1600s, and is unique in that it still remains in its original form. For a small admission fee, you can climb up to the top level of the castle itself and get some fantastic views across the city – it's worth every yen!
Matsue Castle Town
If you’re a history buff, checking out Matsue’s Samurai Residences needs to be added to your Shimane itinerary. The residences are situated in close proximity to Matsue Castle, and have been preserved to give you an idea of how some high ranking samurai families would have lived in times gone by. The residences have been under renovation for some time now, but are scheduled to reopen in August 2018.

Sakane-san was a wonderful guide with excellent English. She listened to us when we said what we wanted to do and she introduced us to the highlights of Matsue. She gave us perfect transportation and restaurant advice as well. We felt very well taken care of and informed in her presence!

Our tour of Matsuyama was more than we could’ve hoped for. My wife and I truly appreciated our guide Kim’s insight and kindness. Being able to discuss our interests with our guide prior to the tour made the experience more rewarding than cruise line excursions.

We visited both the Adachi Museum and Garden and the Yuushien Garden with Mika on May 26th. Both of the locations are absolutely beautiful and worth visiting. And Mika is very knowledgeable about the history and background of both sites. Mika's knowledge made the trip to both sites far more interesting for us than if we'd gone to to visit those locations on our own. And she was also able to give us a lot of very helpful information about other aspects of the Matsue and Izumo area. Marny Randall
