Experience stunning scenery on an unforgettable day trip to Milford Sound. The pristine Milford Sound is part of the World Heritage Fiordland National Park, in the south west of the South Island, and is famed for its remote atmosphere and rugged beauty. It is New Zealand’s best known fiord and the only one that can be reached by road. Maori are believed to have discovered Milford Sound more than 1,000 years ago, returning seasonally to collect the prized pounamu (greenstone). In the early 1800s John Grono was the first European settler to land in the sound, which he named after Milford Haven in Wales. Described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound was carved by glaciers during the ice ages. Milford Sound is breathtaking in any weather. Cliffs rise high into the air from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade downwards, some as high as 1000 metres.

1.00Poor coordination. The operator promised a drop off location for us and the driver did not honor at all. Also the entire experience feel very rushed. The driver would start driving before the tour members have a chance to sit down; for example.

3.00We went in summer, don't be fooled take warm clothes or even a spare set. The weather can change very fast. It was very cold and very very rainy. The visibility was very low. However, our bus tour guide was amazing, she has so much information and was very down to earth. Due to the heavy rain. The waterfalls did not disappoint, no exaggeration when I say that there were thousands. The low clouds gave a mysterious feeling to the valley. It would have been nice to see have better view, but it was out of everyone's control. Desperate for photos, we got drenched, even waterproof jackets weren't keeping us all dry (don't wear jeans, they don't dry fast). The bus tour was fantastic! The boat tour!!... this we found very unorganised and the weather caused chaos. Not just with our boat company but with all of them. Some cancelled their tours last minute due to the weather and ours were generous enough to load people from another tour onto our boat, which caused over crowding and a few hits to the head with people's umbrella's. Inside there weren't enough seats and Viator had failed to notify our tour operators that I was dairy free. So if you have dietry requirements, even if you fill out the box, its best to ring and notify them yourselves. The staff on the boat were friendly and helpful, despite the chaos and children were laughing and having a good time. Everyone was saturated from standing out on deck attempting to get a photo of the falls and the small amount of views that we had. It was an interesting experience for us. Do we wish we had better weather? Yes Could the boats have been a bit more organised? Yes Did we have a good day? Yes Was our driver awesome? Yes Let's just say, I've walked away with stories to tell and memories to treasure.

5.00Just picture this. Standing on the top deck of the boat, as you are being guided near a waterfall and being informed on the formation and what is being experienced. Then for a moment, it becomes still and quiet. You're in awe of what youre experiencing. That was our Milford Sound experience. The day is lengthy, as the ride is long. Yet all the beautiful spaces, plus the breaks and stops, make the time fly by. By the time you even arrive to Milford, you've already experienced so much beauty. THEN you get to the masterpiece. Stunning. You feel small in such a big world. It's one of the days I'll remember my entire life.
