Nagasaki Peace Park
The Nagasaki Peace Park (平和公園, Heiwa Kōen) is a tranquil space that commemorates the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, which destroyed a significant portion of the city and killed tens of thousands of inhabitants. The complex is comprised of two parks and a memorial museum. In the center of the complex is the Hypocenter Park with a simple, black monolith that marks the explosion's epicenter. Not far from it stands a damaged pillar of the former Urakami Cathedral which was destroyed in the blast. Furthermore, there is an area that allows visitors to take a look at a layer of soil below the park's surface where broken roof tiles, bricks and pieces of glass remain from the explosion.
Inasayama Observation Deck
Mount Inasa (稲佐山, Inasayama) is a 333 meter high mountain close to Nagasaki's city center. The summit can be reached by ropeway, bus or car and offers great views over the city. In fact, the night views from Mount Inasa are ranked among Japan's three best night views besides the views from Mount Hakodate and Mount Rokko. Several television and radio antennas and an observation deck with restaurant are located at the summit.

We were not aware we had to pay for taxis throughout our tour and it made it disjointed for us. Coacoa was sweet and very accommodating. We found her accent difficult and therefore we weren’t able to grasp everything she was telling us. She took us everywhere we wanted to go.

Our guide Hiro was a walking encyclopedia. His knowledge of Nagasaki and its place in Japan's history was amazing. We walked though 1945 to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum to 1634 when the Meganbashi bridge was designed and built. And to Glover Garden, where the garden celebrates the Western styled homes built around 1860, and the beginning of the modernization of Japan. And finally to the man-made port "city" of Dejima. Hiro was very aware of the heat and humidity which ruled the day, emphasizing rest and hydration.

We had a great experience with Hiro-san, our tour guide in Nagasaki. Two months before the tour, he sent me the proposed itinerary. He was very knowledgeable about the culture and history of the city and took us by tram to the main highlights of Nagasaki, including the Peace Memorial, the Atomic Bomb Museum, Spectacles Bridge, Chinatown, Glover Garden, and the Dejima Museum. Hiro was very kind and patient, and we fully recommend this experience in Nagasaki.
