Inasayama Observation Deck
Mount Inasa (稲佐山, Inasayama) is a 333 meter high mountain close to Nagasaki's city center. The summit can be reached by ropeway, bus or car and offers great views over the city. In fact, the night views from Mount Inasa are ranked among Japan's three best night views besides the views from Mount Hakodate and Mount Rokko. Several television and radio antennas and an observation deck with restaurant are located at the summit.
Glover Garden
Glover Garden (グラバー園, Glover-en) is an open air museum in Nagasaki that exhibits mansions of several of the city's former foreign residents and related buildings. It is located on the hill where Western merchants settled down after the end of Japan's era of seclusion in the second half of the 19th century. The main attraction of the garden is the Former Glover House, the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan. Thomas Glover (1838-1911) was a Scottish merchant who moved to Nagasaki after the opening of its port to foreign trade in 1859. He later assisted some of the revolutionaries who would eventually overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate in the Meiji Restoration. Active in various industries, including shipbuilding and mining, Glover features prominently in the early history of Japan's industrialization.

We booked the Nagasaki Full Day Tour with Licensed Guide and Vehicle during our cruise stop, and it quickly became one of the most memorable and well-organized tours of our entire Japan trip. With limited time ashore, we wanted a comfortable private experience that covered both the sobering atomic history and the charming, scenic side of Nagasaki — and this tour delivered perfectly on every level. Our guide (huge shoutout to Hirotaka Hane — he was exceptional!) is a national government-licensed professional who spoke fluent, natural English. He was incredibly knowledgeable, sensitive and respectful when discussing difficult topics, warm, patient, and clearly passionate about his city. He tailored the full day to our pace and interests while making sure we experienced all the key highlights without ever feeling rushed. The private vehicle with air-conditioning was a lifesaver, especially on a warm day. It made moving between sites effortless and comfortable. We began at Inasayama Observatory, where we enjoyed beautiful panoramic viewpoints and received a great introduction to the city layout. From there we moved to the Nagasaki Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum, where our guide gave us all the time we needed. His thoughtful, balanced explanations helped us truly understand this important chapter of history — it was very moving and deeply educational. We also visited the poignant Hypocenter area. In the afternoon, the mood shifted beautifully as we explored Nagasaki’s charming historic district. We visited the serene Sofukuji Temple (really impressive!), walked across the picturesque Megane Bridge (Spectacles Bridge), and then spent time at the stunning Glover Garden with its spectacular harbor views and elegant Western-style homes. We continued to the elegant Oura Catholic Church (Japan’s oldest surviving church) and enjoyed a lovely stroll around Dejima, learning about Nagasaki’s unique role as Japan’s only window to the West during the isolation period. We even squeezed in a relaxed stop at a shopping street after Glover Garden — the perfect way to end the day. Everything ran smoothly with excellent timing, plenty of photo opportunities, and thoughtful explanations throughout. Our guide handled all the logistics perfectly, shared wonderful local insights, and even recommended great spots for souvenirs. If you’re visiting Nagasaki (especially on a cruise) and want a high-quality, private full-day experience with a true professional licensed guide and comfortable transportation, this tour is outstanding. It strikes the perfect balance between reflection and enjoyment. Highly recommended — worth every yen! Massive thanks to Hirotaka Hane and the team — you made our day in Nagasaki both meaningful and unforgettable!

Great tour of Nagasaki. Our guide, Coco did a very nice job. We toured the Peace Park and Atom Bomb Museum which were well done and very sobering. We also saw the Sofukuji Temple and Glover Garden. It took a full day and lots of walking but was worth the time spent.

Hiro was wonderful. Very knowledgeable and wanted us to have a great experience…which we did! We asked to tweak the itinerary, and he didn’t miss a beat. Even found us a local restaurant, which was great.

Our tour guide, Rikako, contacted me immediately after booking this tour. She kept in constant contact, which was very reassuring. We loved spending the day with Rikako. She is a resident born in Nagasaki and offered many personal stories as well as historical ones. She is knowledgeable an answered my husband’s many questions. Rikako was also flexible in what we chose to do and was easy to work with. We wish her the best as she continues on in her work.

Thank you to our local Nagasaki born and bred tour guide, Rikako, and our driver, Mr. Sakaguchi, for the wonderful private customized tour! Despite the rare and unusual on/off snow/sleet earlier in the day (made it very unique), we learned a lot and really enjoyed our time seeing the sites we requested, from the Atomic bomb museum to visiting the Peace Park to the Oura Cathedral. We never felt rushed during the trip. We had a yummy lunch at a local Tonkatsu restaurant suggested by Rikako as well got in some shopping at the gift stores. Rikako also gave us each a nice gift at the end of our tour. You made our experience very special. Highly recommend to those who want a more tailored tour and experience.

Our day spent with Rikako was one of the best days we have had on our trip to Japan. We visited all the sites we were interested in seeing and learned a great deal more about the historical events that took place in this city. Rikako was so friendly and engaging and very knowledgeable contributing greatly to our day. Anyone visiting Nagasaki would be very happy to have Rikako as their guide. We would highly recommend her. She far exceeds a five star rating!!
