Today was probably one of the worst tours I've ever been on. First, if you don't know already, Japan assigns seats on the bus. It's the only country that I done tours in that does this. Today, they went one further and assigned this single woman an older traveler to take care of the whole day. Yes, I paid to babysit and entertain another person. There is a reason I travel ALONE!! I realize the culture here is women should be family oriented but I'm not of this culture ( although this country is beautiful and I love the people) and I'm on vacation. Let me be on vacation. Then, and this is not their fault, the highway was blocked so we could not go to Shirakawa so instead they sent us to this supposedly great town with old buildings and a castle. The old houses are about as old as the 1970s. You can see the same in Tokyo, Kyoto, and definitely in Osaka. The castle is small and a 20 minute climb up a hill unless you're babysitting an older person and then it's 35 minutes. I would rather have stayed in Takayama. Which reminds me. The tour says it starts at 8:30 but then I got notification from the company that it starts at 9. This meant we missed the morning market because we got there 8 minutes before Noon. That is not good if that's part of why you picked the tour!! I just was incredibly disappointed over the waste of money this day was. I try desperately to find positives in everything. My positive was I had a great chestnut and chocolate cookie. Getting that cookie by this tour, it was a very expensive cookie!
