Nikko Tosho-gu
Understand why “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko” visiting the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and nearby shrines and temple. The most renowned shrine of “the Shrines and Temples of Nikko”-a Japan’s leading world heritage, is where Ieyasu Tokugawa, the great Shogun who started the flourishing Edo Period, is enshrined. Most of the shrine complex you see today was rebuilt in 17th century. The shrine contains 55 buildings including 8 national treasures and 34 listed buildings. The highlights are sumptuous carvings lacquered and richly coloured brilliantly, which you will gaze at craftsmanship assembled from all over the country. Do not miss the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses!
Kegon Falls
Kegon Waterfall is the most famous of Nikko’s 48 waterfalls. Water from Lake Chuzenji falls 97 metres straight down to the rocks below creating a dynamic and artistic work of nature. A special lift takes visitors to the basin where the force and roar of the water can be witnessed close up! Impressive in any season, the waterfall looks particularly spectacular when surrounded by the fresh green leaves in May, house martins in June, or the “12 falls” - small streams of the frozen waterfall clad in blue ice - during January and February.

Ichi provided us with a memorable and personable tour through Nikko. We thoroughly enjoyed his sweet and insightful nature, and all of the specific details surrounding Japanese history and culture that he shared with us. By the end of the tour, we wanted to adopt him into the rest of our travels. We adored this tour, and it was made that much better by Ichi. Thank you so much for everything!

Our group of six friends was guided through Nikko by Takafumi Nishikawa. He took initiative to ask for our specific interests and limitations long before the tour and responded promptly, giving us good options and suggestions. On the day, he was timely in meeting us and very well prepared - he had marked-up individual maps of the area we’d tour and used this to give us a good overview and plan for the day. He was effective in changing the itinerary on the fly to even better align with our specific interests…. and ensure we wouldn’t miss our train! His knowledge was extensive and shared in an engaging way: this is no small task given crowding at the sites! He arranged lunch at an excellent restaurant after our tour. He is meticulous, personable and thoroughly committed to providing the best possible experience for clients. I highly recommend Taka. The only improvement I could suggest is using a microphone linked to clients’ earphones to ensure that all can hear him at all times. This only reflects on the tour’s resources and is no criticism of Taka’s exceptional skills and abilities. Thanks for a memorable day in Nikko!

We had a wonderful time in Nikko thanks to our tour guide Tatsu! He was very accommodating and gave us really helpful advice for the best ways to get to our meeting point. He was also very knowledgeable in planning out our itinerary so that we could make the most of our time and gave us the perfect blend of history, nature, and delicious food! Tatsu taught us a lot about each place we visited in Nikko and pointed out a lot of small details that we definitely would have missed on our own. Overall Nikko is a beautiful place to visit and we are grateful to have had Tatsu as our guide!

Yumi was wonderful. She struck a great balance by being informative enough to make things interesting but not so much that people lost interest. The whole family enjoyed our day very much.

My wife and I had the pleasure to visit Nikko with Yuki. She succeeded to share her passion to Nikko with us and gave us all he explanations necessary to fully grasp the balance and harmony between Shintoism and Buddhism, temples and shrines so famous in Nikko. We wanted to visit the Shinkyo bridge, Togoshu shrine, Rinnoji temple, to see Futaran Shrine, explore the Kanaya history hotel museum. We did all of it. She knew that we wanted to see as well the lake Chuzenji lake and the Kegin falls but to visit everything is quiet difficult. Because we had an early start and the fact she bought for us some tickets in advance, we avoided the long lines and saved a lot of time. We did manage to go to the lake and the Kegon falls. Even better : she introduced us to one of the last wood craftsman in Nikko region. Amazing! Thanks Yuki Gad and Caroline Important tip: We were there in mid-november and up in Kegon it was snowing. So be prepared.
