This was an incredible experience. As promised, ETHOS offered an extremely authentic tour, aligned to my wants. I had a Red Dao local guide (Lomay) who taught me all about local traditions - including sewing traditional clothing, and picking herbal medicines. I stayed with a local family, had a traditional herbal bath and even taught the children some maths! I would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to escape the tourist hubs and experience real culture.

I did two one day walking trips with Ethos - both of which were excellent. The mountain scenery was really good as were the lunches in mountainside homes. But what made the walks exceptional was the quality of the guides, they were very engaging and could articulately explain local cultures, farming practices and adapting to the modern world etc. They made very good and interesting company for a walk. Ethos office staff were also welcoming, friendly and helpful. I would have no hesitation in recommending Ethos and wish them all the best for the future.

We had a fantastic day tour with ETHOS! Our guide was very kind, helpful and knowledgeable. During the walk we visited her mothers’s home, and her own home. The food was absolutely amazing - and we really enjoyed being part of preparing the meal. Our kids age 8 and 9 yrs loved this experience and were enjoying playing hide and seek with our guide’s same age daughter, while we dozed off in the wonderful herbal bath. This experience with ETHOS felt very respectful and close to heart, and will stay with us for a long time. I would warmly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the spirit of the local communities in this breathtakingly beautiful part of Vietnam.

We had an amazing experience trekking to the Red Dao village. The trek was beautiful and we were lucky to have a view of the rice terraces. Prior to the trek, the Ethos staff ensured that we had proper foot wear and provided us with rubber boots. Which was necessary. Our guide was lovely and spoke English well and shared a lot about her culture and everyday life. It was wonderful to come to her home for lunch and meet her family. The lunch was delicious. While on the trek, she collected fresh herbs for the herbal bath which was very relaxing. Highly recommend this trek and experience. We also experienced a food tour through Ethos, which was very eye opening. The 2 guides were lovely and knowledgeable young women from the Hmong people. Local foods we tried were snails, quail eggs and bamboo worms and other delicacies. The guides helped us understand the importance of these foods as well as cultural struggles and history. All in all, the tours with Ethos were amazing and having the women from the different communities share their stories and cultures memorable. Recommended highly

I did the 2 day, 1 night herbal walk with lovely herbal bath. In a month spent in Vietnam it was definitely the outstanding experience- although it didn't exactly feel it at the time! The walking was very tough both physically and mentally. Often I had the bamboo stick in one hand, my guide's hand in the other and still slipped. She never did! It's not really the walking that makes it special though. It's the people you meet, and the experiences you have. Everyone's will be different. On my second day, lunch turned up wrapped in banana leaves, cooked and delivered by a very young girl, on the back of a moped, to a hut in the middle of nowhere. Readers - it was the best meal I had in Vietnam. At the homestay I joined in the cooking, and was taught embroidery. I slept really well in a comfy bed. The host spoke excellent English and really looked after me. This trek was planned for our wedding anniversary, but my husband decided he wasn't up to it. The team at Ethos were so understanding that he'd changed his mind. They even said he could contact them if he needed anything while I was away. That sums up the whole ethos of Ethos really- outstanding care for their clients, the guides and the tribal community they support.

We did the two days one night trekking experience and it was the highlight of our trip in Vietnam. We expected a couple days of trekking with a local guide but it was so much more than that. Previous reviews spoke of cultural immersion and I was a bit sceptical of those claims, but it was exactly that. We started the day at Ethos headquarters where we were offered some coffee and tea and received a safety briefing and some background on the area and the local people. It was very relaxed and conversational, and we set of with some rudimentary understanding of the indigenous population and their history. Ethos has a separate room for your luggage, so that you can only take what you need for the trek and the overnight stay. Our guide La took us to lunches with local families and we simply blended in. It was lovely as we didn't feel like outisde guests but simply people who popped in for lunch. Whilst our guide spoke good English, most locals didn't, so we talked a bit through La but otherwise just enjoyed sitting around the fire, helping with the food prep, and sharing some drinks of homemade rice wine. Lunches are long social affairs, with eating food, sharing a few drinks, and eating again. For our first lunch, we stopped at a family who's grandmother was one of the elders and a shaman, and we learned lots about the culture and the role of the shaman in today's society. Lunch, dinner, and breakfast is all local food, and some foraged, but it was all incredibly tasty. The accommodation is very basic but they had an outdoor toilet, outdoor shower, and a bed with lots of blankets and a mosquito net. It's not a luxuy experience but the point is to stay with local families, support them by doing it, and experience their lifestyle. On our hike we spotted a couple snakes but our guide pointed them out well in advance and we stopped to let them past. We hiked after a heavy rainfall and came upon a few leeches, but again our guide guided as expertly through. If you're a bit squimish, I'd suggest you chat to your guide first so they can adjust the route accordingly. When we returned to ethos headquarters, we ended up staying for another couple hours drinking tea and chatting to the founders about what we experienced (others just grabbed their stuff and headed off, which was also completely fine). I would recommend this experience to absolutely anyone and everyone - we learned a lot, saw some beautiful views and came away very humbled by the experience.

I booked a 2 day trek with overnight homestay in a red dao village. I couldn’t recommend ethos enough, from the initial briefing with company founders Phil and Hoa, to the trek and homestay itself, everything was completely in alignment with what I wanted to experience visiting sapa. Ethos’s vision aims to empower the women of the Hmong and Red Dao tribes through tourism, offering a unique insight into their daily lives and allowing consumers to completely immerse themselves in a culture very different to the western world. It was truly a unique, raw experience. My beautiful guide was Maysieu. A lovely Dao woman, with the sweetest laugh I’ve ever heard. May welcomed me into her home with open arms, made sure my belly was always full and there was a smile on my face. Thankyou for sharing your culture with me Maysieu, I’ll never forget you or your wonderful family (or your laugh).

We're just remembering that exactly one year ago, on November 1st, 2024, we took a tour with Ethos, but never wrote our review. We'd like to rectify that now. We booked a half-day tour with lunch with a local family through Ethos for our family of four – our two young sons (4 and 2 years old). We'd like to thank them all again from the bottom of our hearts! What for a great memory! We all thoroughly enjoyed the tour and meeting the locals. Cha was our tour guide and did a fantastic job. She showed us the area and explained aspects of their way of life, agriculture, and plants. She lovingly crafted little animal figures for our children, patiently answered all our questions, and acted as a friendly liaison between us and the family we were visiting. She was very approachable and friendly. There were absolutely no communication problems. Also the family was very kind and interesting to meet. The food we prepared together was super delicious. The information session before the hike was also very informative. While my husband and I listened, young women from the team lovingly looked after our two children. That was really wonderful. We would book another tour with Ethos anytime and had a wonderful and very interesting experience overall. Many thanks to everyone!

We just finished finished our 2 days trek with Maysieu and we are blown away ! She shown us the way around the different village of the black Hmong community while also walking in more adventurous path ! She explained the traditional herbal medicines used, their benefitd and also a vast knowledge around rice culture. I highly recommand the herbal bath ! You will be immersed in a hot bath with herbs collected and cooked during your trip. We we warmly welcommed in her familly and shared a delicious meal to close the day. Ethos explained how the experience is included in the contexte of today’s Vietnam and the different northern communities. They made sure everything went smoothly. I felt that I was at someone’s home helping me to spend a meaningful time in Sapa and not an agency.
