The Otago Central Rail Trail is the Original Great Ride in New Zealand's burgeoning Cycle Trails Network. This particular section of the trail is the most spectacular - it also suits travelers on a short time frame and a high level of fitness is not required.

Your trip will start at 9am at our shop in Historic Clyde. You will be fitted out for your Merida hire Bikes and be given information on points of interest along the way, then transferred to Auripo for your days ride by our very knowledgeable driver. From Auripo, you cycle a short distance to the Poolburn Gorge this is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Otago Central Rail Trail as it cuts through the Raggedy Range that separates the Manuherikia and Ida Valleys. Highlights of this section include the 37m high Poolburn Viaduct, two tunnels, the trails longest bridge and Central Otago stunning landscapes. After 17kms Muddy Creek Cafe in Omakau is the perfect stop for coffee and great cinnamon scrolls. You can then take the option of a side trip to historic Ophir, before cycling down Tiger Hill to the Chatto Creek Tavern. Relax and refresh yourself at the Tavern and we collect you from here at 2.30pm, or you can carry on to Clyde. Cycling distances; Auripo to Omakau 17kms, Omakau to Chatto Creek 12kms, Chatto Creek to Alexandra 18kms, Alexandra to Clyde (via Rail Trail 8kms, via the River Trail 12kms).

5.00I recently I completed the trail over 3 days, as it was my first bike trail ride I was keen to utilise the expertise of a tour company. Steve from Bike it now guided me on my initial planning and preperation which was incredibly helpful. I decided to go with an E bike which I am so glad I did as I think it allowed me to enjoy the experience so much more as I was able to head off on wee ticky tours when I arrived at each destination without to much protest/resistance from the legs or botty! I had such a great time throughout the whole experience, the trail is fantastic and the location is just beautiful. The weather was variable however thanks to the recommendations for packing from Bike it Now I was prepared for anything! The accomadations was fantastic the hosts were just lovely, the food and stops along the way, as recommended by Fletch, were spot on. I had an amazing experience and would recommend to anyone, I look forward to completing other trails and will definitly be working with the team at Bike it now again!!!

5.00Perfectly organized. From Checkin & Instructions about the trail & bike at the beginning in Clyde until the pickup & return shuttle at the end of the 3rd day in Middelmarch. The BnB‘s were we stayed during the nights were amazing. A very big THANKS to the Bike it Now! - Team!

5.00People at the shop were very kind and helpfull ) and lota of humour) when we arrived. We got some (clear) instructions about the bikes and our trail. The brought us by car to Auripo and then it started. It was a beautiful tour. Lots of scenic places.The bikes were perfect! Lunch at Chattoo Creek as planned and a call to the rental company whether we would bike on or wanted to be picked op. Of course we wanted to continue our trip. When we came back people were waiting for us, again very kind. I surely recommend this organisation!

5.00Bike it now! is a great organisation, taking care of all details of your holiday or tour. They provided us with state of the art e-bikes, great accommodation and advice for our3-day trip (Roxburg Gorge/Clutha Gold). All people, from owner to driver to mechanic were very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We highly recommend them, and we will certainly turn to them again for our next visit!

5.00The Bike It Now staff particularly Kate and Fletch were very professional and helpful. Shuttle services were seamless. Accommodation was excellent and the hosts were friendly and super-hospitable. The trail featured amazing scenery. It is an extraordinary, unforgettable journey in every sense! However, it is important to note that while the track is rated as 'Easy', the gravel is uneven in parts with loose angular stones. Accordingly, you need to keep your wits about you at all times to avoid falls.

5.00We had a great time doing the Otago Rail Trail. Ours was a four day cycle from Clyde to Middlemarch in Nov/Dec. The staff at Bike it Now were friendly, helpful and the briefing on arrival at Clyde was informative and proved very useful. The terrain is largely flat and we used unpowered bikes. Thoroughly enjoyed this trip.

5.00Bike it Now did a superb job from my very first inquiry until we returned our bikes after our two day trip. Complete preparation information, excellent bikes, wonderful staff and great suggestions for stops along the way. We stayed at the Lauder School Bed and Breakfast which was excellent. The owners really have it comfortable with nice modern updates. Bike it Now arranged our dinner reservation at the local pub which was a nice plus. We enjoyed the scenery along the way. Stops for flat white coffee and delicious lunches as well as historical landmarks. Oh yes, getting to fill in our Passports with each of the rail stops was fun. The information each stopped provided really added to our overall experience.Plus right near the end of our trip it started to rain and thank goodness Ruru Winery was open for a warm and tasty stop. The information each stopped provided really added to our overall experience. Highly recommend! Already talking about our Next Bike trip with Bike it Now.

5.00My wife and I visited South Island in October 2025 from our home in the Orkney Islands. We had previously cycled in France with an Australian friend with rented bikes - from Orleans to Angers and from Bordeaux to Narbonne and sought his suggestions when planning our trip. He strongly advised us to do the Otago Trail (which he had done twice) and sang the praises of Bike it now. We had a fantastic experience. The staff at Bike it Now could not be faulted. They were very professional and helpful a gave us a thorough briefing before we set of, including advice on the forecasted unseasonably high winds, encouraging us to contact them for assistance if we ran into any difficulties. The trail itself was a delight — very easy climbs and descents, a good smooth surface, nice an and wide, ever changing and soften spectacular scenery. Our 3 nights accommodation were all very good, including the dinners. On the last day the very strong winds ( which had mostly been tail winds) increased to severe gale from the side. It was becoming dangerous to continue. We phoned Bike it Now who arranged a rapid pick up for us and our bikes. Excellent service, and a wonderful experience despite the unusually extreme winds. No adverse comments at all.
