From early November to February the Vesuvius isn't accessible and it is replaced with Positano, except for Christmas period (from 26/12/25 until 02/01/26) when Vesuvius is open.
During summer months in rare cases of inclement weather or strikes, the crater of Vesuvius may be closed to visitors, therefore, if this is the case, it is replaced with a visit to Sorrento where you will get free time to explore the city.
The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius requires a good level of general fitness. The walk is uphill at a 14 degree angle and takes roughly 20 minutes.

We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and it was easy from start to finish. We arrived at piazza del popolo where there are many staff from City Wonders there to help you, then our tour director was Patricia, she was lovely and very knowledgeable. The coach journey to Pompeii is an hour and a half with a 20 minute coffee break followed by another hour and a half. We were then met by a tour guide who took us around Pompeii. He was funny and knowledgeable explaining to us everything from the layout of the houses to showing us the ancient brothel. We stopped for lunch which catered for gluten free dietary requirements. We had gluten free pasta and fruit for dessert rather than the pizza and tiramisu. And then we did the hike up Vesuvius which wasn’t too bad but is a lot steeper than I thought it would be. Good comfortable footwear is a must. There are places to get snacks, drinks and souvenirs a long the way. Took us half an hour to get to the top but neither me or my other half are in our peak fitness so can be done quicker. The day was rounded off by meeting Piero and learning about all his different spirits. Wait too you see the size of his lemons, not a euphemism. Overall 5 stars, it was the highlight of our trip!

Chiara was an interesting, informative and entertaining while sharing various historical and geographical things of interest as we drove from Rome to high up Mount Vesuvius, and then on to Pompei. Mount Vesuvius was fascinating and after a 20 minutes- half hour hike to the summit on one path that all were using (so no guide needed) I arrived at the crater where steam issued from one side of the crater and you could see the enormous hole left by the last eruption earlier in the last century. If you looked out the other way you could see across Naples, the beautiful Mediterranean Sea and the island of Capri. After the hike back down (much faster than going up, obviously) we had a delicious pizza at a local restaurant, traditional Naples style, then drove 20 minutes to Pompei for the guided tour of the site. The Pompei tour guide here shared their knowledge and entertaining anecdotes as they showed us around the ruins of the ancient city. We were a bit tired and flagging (and full of pizza!) by then but it was still an enjoyable experience. When this tour finished we drove back to Rome with Chiara, with a comfort break mid way. I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in seeing Mount Vesuvius and Pompei. I will note that the hike up to the summit of Mt Vesuvius is self guided, but there is only one path and many other people are on it going up and down. You need a fair fitness level and sense of balence for this hike as it is on an incline for half a kilometre and the soil beneath you is mixed with volcanic matter which can shift a little occasionally. For me it was very much worth it to see the summit. If you do not wish to hike to the summit you can still see the stunning views across the Naples bay as the coach takes you quite high up the mountain.

Meet up spot was incredibly disorganized. Pompeii tour guide was great - showed us as much as she could in the time allowed. However, our bus broke down so we never made it to Vesuvius. Our partial refund request was also denied. Overall, very disappointed we wasted a day of our honeymoon in a broken down bus. 13 hours start to finish and no backup snacks/water available.
