The imposing castle, which belonged first to the Aldobradeschi and then to the Orsini, dominates the village of Pitigliano which was built on the edge of a tufa cliff on the river Lente.

A network of alleys that descend to overlook the valley, the extraordinary ancient Jewish quarter, the Ghetto (closed on Saturdays), the deep cellars dug under the streets, the Etruscan gate, the hidden corners of the Fratta district, welcome the visitor fascinated by the incredible beauty of the landscape of Pitigliano.

We will also visit the extraordinary vie cave dug by the Etruscans around Pitigliano, ancient sacred roads even 10 meters deep and we will try to discover the secret of their origin. These ancient roads, along which the Etruscan necropolis are found, were also used as refuges during the war

Very informative tour. Beautiful location. The tour guide was warm, friendly, thoughtful, and very knowledgeable about the area. She clearly is a regular as she knew many of the people in the area along the tour. Great shopping recs as well. Would highly recommend. Note: Roberta wasn't feeling well and so arranged for a tour with her colleague Stefania (sp?), which I appreciated. So this review is technically of her colleague.

Roberta is a nice person and pleasant to be around. We certainly saw more sights in the area than we would have on our own. She did have information on the Etruscans and the Etruscan Caves that we would not have had without her. With her as a guide, we were able to navigate Pitigliano with ease without using a map application. In our trip we had three private guides. The other two guys were very enthusiastic, constantly explaining things, and understanding our questions with ease. Roberta spoke far less than the other guides. Much of the time we followed her in silence until the next stop. There was also an interaction where she did not understand the question I was asking. Overall the tour was fair, not quite good based on the amount of time without interactions.

Roberta was absolutely wonderful - knowledgeable and fun; we had a great time. Excellent history lessons, and great local food tips for lunch.

Our guide was Elisabetta because Roberta was sick. She was wonderful! Having been born in the city and raised there she had a passion and knowledge that only a native could have. Just walking down the street and having people calling out to her was fun. Her personality and intelligence made the city and its history come alive. This was a lovely experience for all of us. Thank you, Elisabetta!
