About 100 kilometers from Bucharest and 44 kilometers from Ploiesti, the Slanic salt mine is a recognized destination for balneal and touristic activities since 1853, when it was declared a tourist destination of national interest in Romania.

Among the superlatives of the salt mine (especially the Union Mine), the most important tourist and health objective in the resort, there is a huge volume of excavated salt, about 2.9 million cubic meters, which led to the creation of cavities with gigantic volumes, respectively 14 trapezoidal rooms totaling about 80,000 square meters.

The 14 underground rooms have an opening of 10 meters to the ceiling, 32 meters wide at the bottom, and the height is 54 meters. The depth of the salt mine is 208 meters. The impressive dimensions granted it the title of the largest salt mine in Europe.

Unirea Salt Mine

We visited the largest salt mine 2.5 hours away by car(including a stop on the route for a break) we arrive at the Slanic Prahova Salt Mine and the Salt Mountain. The maximum depth of the mine is 217 m, and its trapezoidal chambers measure 55 m high, the total area of the mine being approximately 80,000 m2. The height of one hall is 70 m, and the circuit runs around the enormous pillar that supports the mine. The Unirea Mine is the result of the excavation of 2.9 million m3 of salt deposit which created cavities with gigantic volumes: 14 chambers with a trapezoidal profile. inside you can visit the salt lake and the waterfall, which can be admired from a wooden bridge. various exhibitions with equipment that was used to exploit the salt mine or to rescue the miners. Be aware of the traffic on the way to and from Bucharest. The experience itself (the salt mine) was AWESOME - very enjoyable.

Must do salt mine. Awsome! Yes cold at approx.200m below. No English guided tour as stated. Only driver for 20 pax.... van full capacity and cramped. Not comfortable when wet from walking through rain and only 1 pick up point offered.

Really cool experience, different to other trips. Surreal underground wonderland with cafe, activities for kids, lots of space to walk around.
No tour. Just transportation and entrance tickets.

The tour operator did not contact or confirm me regarding the meeting point or time until I took the initiative to check with them. I texted the tour operator via Viator messages many times few days before the tour but not a single response at all. Feel nervous about it. Especially the meeting point was updated and was different from the one stated on the event page. On the event day, no tour was given even though the page said it included an English tour. You will have transportation and entrance tickets in the price only. The driver’s attitude is okay but a bit blunt. Did not feel super welcome.

Well organised driver, prompt, kept everyone to schedule. Mine was really interesting, two hours was about right. It’s v cold down the mine, bring a jumper!

This was beautiful. Inside the mine there were places to sit, things for kids to play on, a spot to get a coffee, and some history posters. The only thing to keep in mind is it can take 30 minutes or more to exit the mine waiting for the ride back to the top so plan ahead.

This was well worth the visit. Tour company was reliable and the driver was very helpful. The mine visit was quite a place. The drive through the tunnel was fascinating but we were taken aback by the amazing mine itself which is an incredible feat of human engineering. Very real and very interesting.

We did enjoyed this trip, but no information were given about the Salt mines or anything. The driver was great, he drove us there, got us at the front of the queue, which was very long and then you get driven to the mines to walk around and then return. Which there were information given about the Salt Mines.

Excellent service and a very good guide. The mines are amazing - a subterrerean marvel. A visit is a must. The air is so pure !!
