Shihding Ciandao Lake
Your tour starts with a visit to Thousand Island Lake, which is located in the south of Shiding District, New Taipei City. The catchment area of Feitsui Reservoir surrounded by hills creates the unique scenery—a lake with thousands of islands, which shares the same name with the “Qiandao Lake” (literally thousand island lake) in China due to the resemblance between the two.
Bagua Tea Garden
The natural terrain and climate make the surrounding area of Feitsui Reservoir an ideal farmland for tea-growing, including Wenshan Baozhong tea and Dong Fang Mei Ren tea. Bagua Tea Plantation is located in this area, too. From the top of the hill, the neatly planted rows of tea look just like the symbols of Eight Trigrams, hence the name. You will make a stop here and enjoy the stunning views of the endless rows of tea plants amidst the rolling hills around you.

5.00I had a one day layover in Taipei and needed to get my trip completed by early afternoon which is why I chose the private tour. I am so glad I ventured out of the airport because the day ended up being a truly lovely adventure. I met my host at a downtown hotel close to the Taipei Main Station. We drove in a mini van through the winding mountain roads to first take in the breathtaking sights of the thousand island lake. It is hard to conceive that just beyond the bustling downtown Taipei there is this stunning natural wilderness, framing the spectacular jade waters of the lake. Orderly mountainside tea plantations, azaleas and jungle lined the narrow roads. We had a couple of stops to walk and enjoy the views before heading to the traditional village of Pinglin. Here we met with a tea master who walked us through the intricacies and ceremony of tea preparation. My guide, Christina (a brilliant lady who speaks four languages fluently!) patiently translated the entire day adding colour and interesting history lessons to enrich the experience. I am so glad I did this tour. Getting the one on one experience was such a blessing and I loved my day out experience a taste of Taiwanese culture.

4.00It was a very interesting trip to Thousand Island Lake (although you don’t actually get down to the waterfront). Seeing how tea is planted and visiting the tea museum was especially interesting for me as an avid tea drinker who had never really looked into the tea-making process before. The tour itself felt a bit scattered at times, with a loose structure on timing and activities that mostly centered around sightseeing stops. That said, the tea house experience at the end definitely made up for those shortcomings. Overall a 7/10 — a nice option if you have some open time in your Taipei itinerary.

5.00Sharon was very accommodating to our group who needed both English and Mandarin to fully be inclusive. It would be nice to have more free time at the Tea Museum since a lot of the information provided an English translation. My mom wasn't feeling her best while on the tour and she was very helpful with that caveat. The tea ceremony was really fun and the highlight!

5.00This was a fabulous experience! I’m so glad we did it. Our tour guide, Kevin, was engaging, patient, and passionate about teaching us about his culture. He tried to anticipate our needs, and was happy to answer our questions. Our driver, Mr. Chen, did a great job navigating the winding roads and dodging scooters/motorbikes. My one recommendation is that if you have any chance of motion sickness, take you some meds well before the drive. It’s quite breathtaking, so it is worth it. Finally, I read the reviews of this trip before choosing it and was rather surprised with some of the things folks wrote. I know these experiences are all subjective, but if you’re well-traveled, have been driven around in places like Mexico, Peru, Turkey, or rural mountains in the U.S., the drive should not be all that scary. And the hard sell after the tea ceremony? I’m wondering if people have ever gone wine tasting?? There was no hard sell, just an offering to buy some amazing teas that, at least for those in the U.S. are not easy to come by.
