• Expensive train journey, doesn't live up to expectations

  I expected more as it is advertised as one of the Great Journeys. There are certainly some spectacular views, but a lot of the time you are looking at paddocks and embankments. Also, if the trip from Chch to Greymouth was especially busy, the restaurant will be more or less sold out. For some reason they do not stock up in Greymouth. So make sure you've had lunch before boarding and take some snacks with you. The train itself is very comfortable with good seats and high windows to take in the views. There are also carriages where you can stand outside and take photos, if they're not too crowded. All in all I found it too expensive for what you get.

  The scenery from the train is excellent and made easy to see and photograph. We would recommend this trip as a part of every visit to the South Island of New Zealand

  The scenery is amazing. The train is clean and the ride smooth. Food and drink on board is very good. The staff are friendly and efficient.

  Of the three train journeys, the tranzalpine was my absolute favorite! The scenery was beautiful. The coach was very comfortable. There were USB ports for charging. The dining car had a wide variety of options. I also enjoyed the app for learning history on the way.

  Part of our tour group , we took this train ride .. with a glass top..your seats are assigned.. it’s the views that are spectacular and breathtaking.. mountains, creeks, lakes , snowy mountains tops makes it superb .. the water is green-blue …there is a locomotive that serves food and alcohol but you must pay with credit card! It’s a must and buy your tickets in advance.. it’s busy!

  Good experience. Consider taking train from Arthur’s pass as the main ride through Alpines start after that only.

  DO NOT BOOK There is no coast-to-coast train. It is shutdown and they force you onto to a shuttle bus for the western half 3-5 hours late, with no notice or communication besides an email 30 minutes before the listed departure. This is a sub-standard service using bait & switch.

  We just this weekend took the standard Trans Alpine to greymouth on a Saturday and came back on the Sunday with the Plus experience with dining and matched wines. I think we did it the right way round as the return trip I felt gave better views as they opened up in front of you where on the way from Christchurch you were almost looking back over your shoulder. Also the light was a lot better as the early sun was lower and brighter. It did get dark on the last leg back but thats on the flat land into Christchurch where there was less interesting to see. The food on the Senic Plus journey home to Christchurch was exceptional and the wine parings and beers on offer with amazing. We got a nice flat white on arrival, followed by a beer and then paired wines with each of the four course meal. I wasn't sure how good the food would be as it would have to be pre-prepared but the Lamb Shoulder main was one of the best meals I've had at ANY restaurant. The train was very comfortable and you could put a full wine glass on the table and it would never spill its so smooth in its acceleration and deceleration. At full cruising speed it was just over 90kph but it felt like 50. We just walked to the end of the cab to use the toilet or go into the open unit to take photos without the obstruction of glass. While scenic plus was expensive its really a once in a lifetime trip either way and at the end of it I'd have been happy if there was another 2 hours tacked on with the food and drinks. The trip over we found the last hour you were starting to want to get there. Personally if I was ever to do it again I'd get to Greymouth another way and do the Scenic plus Greymouth to Christchurch as The views are better in my opinion both due to direction and light The food is starter, cheese board, main and desert vs Breakfast and Lunch You are generally more ready for beer and wine in the evening It really was an exceptional end to a nice weekend away for my wifes birthday.
