With over 30 rooms on show, visitors can immerse themselves in life as far back as the 16th century when Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen of Connacht ruled the land and seas around the estate. Built upon the foundations of one of her many castles which can still be toured in the dungeons today, the original Westport House was built in 1650 by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, Grace O’Malley’s great-great-granddaughter.
Since then it has undergone a number of developments under the direction of the celebrated architects Richard Cassels (of Carton and Leinster House architectural fame), James Wyatt and Thomas Ivory, progressing from a smaller, one room deep residence with a central open court yard to the stately square house complete with beautiful balustraded terraces that we recognise today.

The house is undergoing major renovations. But, that was east to overlook. The history of the house was very interesting. We thought we had missed the guided tour, but the tour guide agreed to take the 6 of us around.

The Westport House is a wonder to behold and to get lost in all the stories from the very knowledgeable guides that add the perfect balance between Ireland’s difficult history and lighthearted humor to remind us of their extreme will to survive and overcome. The gardens are being redone so we didn’t get to view those. Also, as a side note, if you go Westport you must try the toasties from the ladies in the food truck-they really are the best!

The grounds and the house were an interesting representation of old wealth. There wasn't a guide provided so you had to wander about on your own. Ended up buying a guide so that I could revisit it.

Fantastic tour guide, very friendly staff, amazing story and home. Brilliant news about the new owners and how it will be resand left open for the public. The marble staircase made you feel like you were floating rather than walking.
