Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.
You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

A must for LOTR fans

5.00A must for fans of LOTR. Also, you get to learn a lot more about the other cool stuff that Weta does besides work on LoTR. Our guide was also very warm and got on well with my 2 boys during the tour.

5.00This visit was brilliant and an absolute must for anyone interested in how the movie magic that appears on the screen actually gets created. Be aware this is a working props/effects workshop, not some kind of theme park, but with all sorts of iconic original costumes and weapons on display many, but not all, from Lord of the Rings. A word on the aluminium foil modelling activity, that some comments don’t seem to understand the reason for. The point, as I took it to be, is that anyone can be creative and you don’t need a tonne of expensive kit to do it and can make a start with what is in and around your own home, which is pretty much how Weta started out themselves. If you want more on the origins of Weta (and Peter Jackson and the making of LoR) I strongly recommend the podcast from What Went Wrong (Sad Boom Media) and the three part episode they devote to how LoR came to be.

5.00It was a fascinating tour that showed the inner workings of an active special effects studio. Learning about the make-up process and what actors have to go through to become their characters; the hours they spend in the make-up chair to ply their craft was eye-popping. Pictures are not allowed for part of the tour (be aware).

5.00Very interesting 90 minute tour. Took a local bus out to Wētā. Depending on where you pick it up from harbor could be about 30 to 45 minute trip plus the time to walk to bus stop from harbor. Loved meeting the artists in residence and getting to actually get a hands on experience with some of the props! The number of films this studio has been involved with is crazy.
Must do for movie fans!

5.00Such an awesome tour! If you are interested in movies, art or behind the scenes work; you MUST take this tour! I do wish they had more items to purchase from other movies and not just from LOTR.

5.00Wonderful experience! It's worth the high entrance price for sure if you are a fan of LOTR and appreciate craftsmanship and art. Our tour guide was so great and clearly passionate about the Weta workshop and was able to answer all our questions. Fascinating tour!

5.00Not to be missed! This tour was one of the highlights of my trip to NZ. I am so glad a booked this trip to Weta. I didn't realize that they had made and contributed to so many movies that I have seen in the past. The tour last about an hour and a half. You can't take photos in all the rooms, but it was an experience I would recommend to all ages!

5.00Hubby and I visited the Weta Workshop in Wellington and as a creative person myself, I found it one of the most surprising and enlightening travel experiences I've ever had. The artists at work were so passionate, animated and willing to share their craft with us, to be honest, I was fighting back tears of sheer joy at the end of our tour. So many great ideas to take home and try out! I can't wait to visit Hobbiton and next time we come to Auckland I will definitely sign up for another Weta workshop experience. I highly recommend a Weta Workshop experience to all NZ visitors.
