Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.
You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

Suitable for all physical fitness levels
Photography is strictly prohibited in all tour spaces, unless specified by the tour guide.
Collapsible wheelchairs with removable wheels can be accommodated providing the passenger is accompanied by someone who can assist them on board and disembark.
There is no luggage storage in the Weta Cave or at our tour spaces.

Meet your guide at the Wētā Cave store to begin your journey through the movie-magic world of Wētā Workshop! Explore props, costumes, and cool stuff From The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to Avatar andDistrict 9: learn about props, costumes and creatures created for your favourite films. Interact with cool stuff from our creative departments and catch an artist at work on our tour stage. Enter our world of miniatures and modelmaking Discover the filmmaking technique of miniature effects and learn how they are built for hit TV and film productions. Wander through monumental miniatures from Thunderbirds Are Go and see how we fit an entire island, cityscape and mansion under one roof!

5.00We're huge LOTR fans and could have spent all day here- so much to see. Brandon our guide was enthusiastic, entertaining and knowledgeable. My only slight criticism is that as a hearing impaired visitor I couldn't hear the videos, and there were no subtitles. Fascinating place, with the opportunity to handle props and have a go at sculpting. Also noticed other Weta items on display around Wellington, which we would otherwise have missed. The shop is incredible.

5.00Fantastic tour. We didn't realise how many films and exhibitions WETA workshop was involved in. The detail in each piece is just brilliant. The artists working here are so talented. This place is well worth a visit.
