Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.

You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible

Suitable for all physical fitness levels

Photography is strictly prohibited in all tour spaces, unless specified by the tour guide.

Collapsible wheelchairs with removable wheels can be accommodated providing the passenger is accompanied by someone who can assist them on board and disembark.

There is no luggage storage in the Weta Cave or at our tour spaces.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but the guide was excellent providing fascinating facts about the origins and development of the company and information about all the creations, how they are made and in which films they appeared. I was impressed by all the models, prosthetics, costumes and weapons that were recognizable from the LOTR and Narnia films I’ve seen and loved. I was also impressed by the number of productions the Weta workshop has contributed to. Great stuff, Weta workshop! Keep it up!!

Great tour! You get to see not only LOTR props but props from Sci Fi and other movies. You are shown a prop making process and artists share their stories. Not only do you get a real sense of how much work goes into making the props but also how much fun it would be to work there!

Unreal. Didn't expect the depth of the tour to cover such a vast range of the entire operation. Flynn was a great host and guide.

It's excellent. The tour guide explains very well the process and how the company started. You even get some hands on with the swords and making something creative. Super fun!

I knew they were responsible for many of the costumes & special effects for the Lord of the Rings, but was not aware that they also have supported over 100 other movies & shows. If you’re a movie fan then this is a must see activity. Note: they wouldn’t allow picture taking for the first 1/2 of the tour but we had plenty of things to see and things to take pictures of so bring your camera or smartphone with you.
